Governor Lamont stood in front of cameras today praising the new 55 Elm Club project in Hartford — a stunning renovation with sky-high ceilings, quartz counters, and a “long-and-winding road” of development.
And while it’s beautiful, let’s be honest — this is not affordable housing.
Twenty percent of the units are reserved for low- and moderate-income residents, but that still leaves the majority out of reach for the very people we heard from at the Louder Than a Veto forum — women working two and three jobs, families days away from eviction, veterans and seniors struggling to stay housed.
We can celebrate progress and demand better. Connecticut deserves housing that’s not just market-rate luxury with a token “affordable” label — we need equity, access, and compassion built into every plan.
Projects like 55 Elm prove it’s possible to build. Now, let’s ensure we build for everyone.
