Next Monday, Barbershop Talk & BBQ will make space in Norfolk for an evening of real conversation around health, wealth, fatherhood, mentorship, and the issues affecting men and boys in our communities.

There will be FREE haircuts, food off the grill, and local organizations and professionals in the room with resources you can use in your daily life. Ask about your health. Learn about financial resources. Connect with employment, education, family support, and other services available right here in Hampton Roads.

We want fathers in the room. Sons. Brothers. Uncles. Coaches. Mentors. Young men who could use some guidance and men who have something to pass down.

Sixty-three years after the original March on Washington, the work continues.

Last week, the Urban League of Hampton Roads traveled to D.C. for the 2026 March on Washington, joining The National Urban League President Marc H. Morial, fellow Urban League affiliates, and organizations from across the country in defense of voting rights.

The morning began on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where speakers called for equal access to the ballot and continued community-led voter education. Among them was Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.

From there, we took to the streets, marching alongside Rev. Al Sharpton, Yolanda R. King, Martin Luther King III, and advocates from across the nation.

The stories communities document help shape what future generations understand about the people, movements, and moments that came before them.

Our Urban League of Hampton Roads Young Professionals invite you to a special Author Talk & Book Signing exploring how Black communities preserved their own historical record through the pages of "Requiem for Reconstruction: Black Countermemory and the Legacy of the Lowcountry’s Lost Political Generation" from Hampton Roads native Robert D. Bland.

Bland, an Assistant Professor of History and Africana Studies at the University of Tennessee, will sit down with Dr. Adrienne Petty, Associate Professor of History at William & Mary, to discuss how Black leaders built archives, used the Black press to document political life, and created community counternarratives when dominant accounts minimized their contributions.

"Requiem for Reconstruction" examines a generation of Black Americans who experienced Reconstruction as a defining political movement. Set in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Bland follows figures including Robert Smalls, William Whipper, and Frances Rollin as they helped shape how that era would be remembered.
