Last week on BBC News’ Business Today with Sally Bundock, and at BBC World Service I discussed Greece’s conflicting economic signals.

It was an important conversation about the difference between headline recovery and everyday reality.

On one hand, Greece is finally showing strong macro-economic performance—growth, investment, and stability are all moving in the right direction. Yet on the other hand, streets in Athens have been blocked by farmer protests, triggered by soaring costs, delayed subsidies, and a major agricultural subsidy fraud scandal that has shaken public trust.

In the interview, I explained how these two realities can coexist:

• Recovered macro-economic fundamentals do not automatically translate into recovered household and farmers’ incomes and savings.
• Governance and structural weaknesses have resurfaced with farmer’s faulty subsidies.
• Rising costs are pushing farmers and all households to the breaking point.

🚨 New Episode Alert!
We’re bringing the conversation to the foothills of the Acropolis in Athens 🇬🇷 for a powerful sit-down with world-renowned economist Charles Calomiris. In just 20 minutes, he delivers a compelling Reality Check on why secure property rights are the cornerstone of economic development.
Drawing from decades of research and global policy advising, Calomiris unpacks how informality traps millions in poverty, how institutions often fail, and how trust, leadership, and long-term vision can break cycles of dysfunction.

He also explores how the Reality Check Analysis (RCA) framework helps cut through the noise to reveal the real levers of lasting reform. Don’t miss this one!
