The Brandt House, dating back to 1860, stands as a pivotal piece of local history in Watertown, Wisconsin. Once the residence of Frederick W. Brandt, a German immigrant who established a thriving department store, the house carries an intricate historical legacy. Brandt's entrepreneurial spirit led to the evolution of the store into a significant business, later taken over by his son, Edward Brandt.
Edward, a banker turned innovative industrialist, revolutionized the money-handling business with the invention of the Brandt Automatic Cashier. His contributions extended beyond finance, making an impact on the community's music and social scene. The home also saw the stewardship of Earl Quirk, continuing the family's success through Brandt, Inc.
Architecturally, the house is a fusion of Italianate and Colonial Revival styles, featuring characteristic elements like stained glass windows, a porte cochere, and various additions over time. Preserved historical interior details, from etched glass to decorative moldings, further reflect the house's rich heritage.
Recently acquired by Jesse and Wendy Sellers, the house underwent restoration and was opened to the public during the 2022 Watertown Holiday Parade of Homes, allowing a glimpse into the captivating history of the Brandt House.
