Truss framing works great—when it’s installed according to the design.
I came across this at a new-build home in Ennis where a portion of the truss bracing had been removed to make room for an HVAC unit.
The problem? Truss members and their bracing aren’t something that should be modified in the field simply because something is in the way. Changes to a truss system can affect how the entire assembly carries its loads and may require approval from the truss designer or engineer.
No documentation was posted at the time of the inspection verifying that this modification had been reviewed and approved.
This is a good reminder that “it fits” doesn’t necessarily mean “it’s structurally acceptable.” When modifications are needed, they should be properly designed, approved, and documented.
