PSA: SUMMER INTERNET SAFETY: HELPING KEEP KIDS SAFE ONLINE
With school out for the summer, many children and teens will be spending more time online connecting with friends, playing games, watching videos, and using social media. While the internet offers countless opportunities for learning and entertainment, it also presents risks that parents and guardians should be aware of.
The Springtown Police Department encourages families to have regular conversations about online safety and digital responsibility. Here are a few important reminders:
• Know the Apps and Games Your Children Use – Take time to understand the platforms your child is using and review privacy settings together.
• Protect Personal Information – Remind children never to share their full name, address, phone number, school, passwords, or other personal information online.
• Be Cautious When Chatting Online – Not everyone online is who they claim to be. Encourage children to avoid private conversations with strangers and to report suspicious behavior.
• Monitor Social Media Activity – Discuss appropriate online behavior and remind teens that what they post online can have lasting consequences.
• Watch for Cyberbullying – Encourage children to speak up if they experience or witness bullying online. Save evidence and report harmful behavior when necessary.
• Set Healthy Screen Time Limits – Balance online activities with outdoor play, family time, and other summer activities.
• Keep Devices Secure – Use strong passwords, enable parental controls when appropriate, and keep software updated to protect against scams and malware.
Parents are encouraged to maintain open communication with their children about their online experiences. Creating an environment where children feel comfortable discussing concerns can help prevent problems before they occur.
If you believe your child has been the victim of online exploitation, harassment, or other internet-related crimes, contact the Springtown Police Department or local law enforcement agency immediately.
Let's work together to make this a safe and enjoyable summer both online and offline.
