Lukas Sjoman built his own 11-meter solar yacht for $20,724. He just passed 3,000 nautical miles on it - using zero fuel.

The Helios 11 runs on ten standard residential rooftop solar panels feeding a 24kWh battery. Peak output hits 4,000 watts of solar energy - enough to power the 6kW electric outboard motor and fully recharge the batteries while anchored. The sun does the work. The boat keeps moving.

The cost breakdown is what makes this genuinely remarkable. Around $2,881 for the battery pack. $4,600 for the electric motor. Under $900 for the solar panels. The rest in hull, rigging, and build materials.

For comparison, a new production sailing yacht starts at roughly $100,000 and drinks diesel every time the wind drops.

Sjoman's vessel also has a half-meter draft - shallow enough to anchor in secluded bays and coves that larger yachts can never reach. The tradeoff for going small and solar isn't just environmental. It opens up coastline that money can't buy access to.

3,000 nautical miles is roughly the distance from Europe to the eastern United States. Done quietly, on sunshine, in a boat he built himself.

The technology to do this has existed for years. What Sjoman demonstrated is that the barrier was never technical - it was imagination.

Trillions of dollars are spent on war and military preparedness. Almost nothing is spent on learning to live cooperatively together. Advances in technology are far exceeding advances in civilizations. If humans don't soon start to realize we are all citizens of a fragile little planet, speeding through space, with no Plan B., first, and citizens of our countries second, we are doomed to a horrible future. If we could instead learn to cooperate and use technology for everyone's benefit, we could create a wonderful future.
