This has been weighing on me for a while now. Why does Witt’s End Wilderness do what we do? We work to thank ALL Veterans for serving. It’s not a competition of what you did or what your job was. Everyone had a roll to play to make the big picture happen. Everyone was a piece of the puzzle. Often times when we post our trips we have family and friends of Veterans nominate Veterans. We reach out to these Veterans and it’s often “give it to someone more deserving” That’s not the intent here. We serve all Veterans and their families. Be proud of your service and what you did. You are in the very small minority of people that raised your hand and took the oath. Not many can say that.

My head is down and I’m focused. I’m wrapping up our Veteran bear hunts and need to shift gears quickly to moose season. Witt’s End Wilderness was blessed with multiple tags to take disabled Veterans on hunts of a lifetime for moose. While I am busy focusing on our own hunts I received a disturbing call today. A disabled Veteran from out of state and his friend (another disabled Veteran) both pulled tags for bulls in the same zone, I want to keep this general as not to blast someone as I only have one side of the story. They made a reservation for lodging, meals, and guide services in July. They now have been informed their “host” has no guides available now a few weeks before the hunt. What??? I am beyond frustrated for these hunters. Like I said I only have one side of the story and am seeking more information. I have put them in touch with a guide service that will try to accommodate them if possible. This is an example of how not to run a business. Do better, many people’s livelihoods depend on it

Witt’s End Wilderness bear camp 2026 is a wrap. There are so many people that make it happen. LP Building Solutions - Houlton has funded and sponsored this program from the start. Their generous funding is a major part of us being able to put the hunts on. Zach Jaminet, the forester from F&W Forestry and Fountains Land, is who grants us permission to the beautiful land we conduct the hunts on. He has been extremely supportive of our cause and what we do. He has been very helpful to us. Jon LeClair has been the lead Bear Guide and has taught me a lot. From selecting our sites, setting up and tearing down, and volunteering and staying at camp for all the hunts. He is always here when I need help. Ryan Brown is always a call away when I need help clearing sites and trails or lugging tree stands. Corey McFadden spent time helping on sites preparing them. Kari keeps the camps running and everyone extremely well fed. She’s up at first light and usually the last to call it a night after the late meal when we get the hunters out of the woods and back to camp. Chase Tapley and his wife Leanne own and run Tapley’s Processing. They processed our Veterans bears at absolutely no cost for each Veteran. They have helped us since our beginning. Their shop is top notch and people travel a long ways to bring bears to them. 4 out of 6 hunters squeezed the trigger or let an arrow fly this season. I call that an enormous success for us. Monday update. Thank you to everyone that shared our post and reached out. We have put this last minute hunt together pending the tag transfer with the state from the donating family. You are all amazing!!

To all my fellow Maine Guides. I have a short notice opportunity to put a moose hunt together for a disabled Veteran in zone 1 for the first Bull week on a donated tag. I am stretched a little thin with guiding hunts on the other 2 weeks. I want this to be a perfect dream hunt for a Veteran. I honestly can’t get boots on the ground to scout as I’m finishing some Veteran bear hunts. If you might be interested in volunteering to work with me to put this hunt together please message me asap.

This is a very special bear to Witt’s End Wilderness. Veteran Aaron who is originally from Maine now resides in Texas. He came and hunted with us last year. He wasn’t lucky enough to harvest a bear. I knew immediately we would invite him back this year. I have never seen a hunter want to learn as much as Aaron. Every day we would go over what to do and how to do it in great detail. He puts a lot of pressure on himself. This year he came back as a true friend, not just another hunter. I could sense the pressure he felt even though I preach these hunts are for fun and the love of being outside. I wanted him to be successful with every ounce of positive energy I could send to the bear gods. Last night his hard work and learning paid off. He harvested a beautiful boar with the best placed shot I have seen. This bear has a perfect white V on his chest. It was meant to be. I saw a lot of emotions from all of us in camp (yes including some wet eyes) There was a lot of celebrating and reflecting on things last night and today. Every trip and adventure we take a Veteran on is special, but this one will forever be with me.

Let’s talk a little more about this bear. I posted some pictures of this guy on Friday after he had been on one of our sights. Fast forward to Friday night. A biologist happened to see my post and reached out. He is a biologist for the Penobscot Nation. He collared this bear on Tribal land in Matagamon in June. Straight line distance from Weston to Matagamon is 52 miles. This boar has been logging some miles. The biologist has been tracking his movements by GPS and said the bear has been in our area for a while. I learned from the biologist these young males will often travel HUGE distances. I hope to learn more as I have lots of questions I still want to ask the biologist. I found this all incredibly interesting and what are the odds the very biologist running the study saw my post.

What a night. Kirby connected on this boar. Absolutely beautiful bear. This was his first bear and he will definitely remember getting it with his grandfathers r***e. This is why we do what we do at Witt’s End Wilderness
