As President Susan Wente closes a remarkable chapter of leadership at Wake Forest University at the end of this month, we celebrate a leader whose vision, collaboration, and commitment to innovation have helped shape the future of both Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem.

Throughout her tenure, President Wente championed bold investments in academic excellence, student experience, and the long-term vitality of our community. Her belief in the power of partnerships and place-making helped bring transformative projects like The Grounds to life, creating new opportunities for connection, growth, and impact.

On behalf of the partners behind The Grounds—Front Street Capital, Carter, and Wake Forest University—we thank President Wente for her leadership, vision, and enduring commitment to this community. Her legacy will be felt for generations, not only on campus, but throughout Winston-Salem and the places that bring people together.

As Wake Forest welcomes Dr. Peter Rodriguez as its next president, President Wente’s legacy will serve as a strong foundation for the University’s continued growth and impact. What will everyday life at The Grounds look like? ⬇️

That’s the question guiding every decision we’re making as the Retail Village takes shape.

Retail leasing is going great, and we’re thoughtfully curating a mix of concepts designed to serve the community from morning to night.

Think coffee before work, convenient lunch options during the day, wellness and fitness experiences, elevated dining for special occasions, and a place to gather with friends to catch the game.

The goal has always been bigger than retail. We’re creating a destination that serves locals, visitors, students, families, and fans every day—not just on event days.

The vision for restoring Upper Silas Creek is taking root.

Over the past few weeks, more than 200 trees and 30,000 native plants have gone into the Upper Silas Creek restoration, helping stabilize the stream, improve water quality, restore habitat, and shape the future landscape of The Grounds.

But this work is about more than restoring a creek corridor. It’s about creating the foundation for a more connected, walkable, and nature-driven district where trails, gathering spaces, and everyday experiences are woven into the landscape itself.

As The Grounds continues to take shape, this restoration will become part of the experience of moving through the district, whether that’s walking the trails, gathering outdoors, or simply spending time alongside a healthier, more resilient landscape.

This restoration effort was designed alongside the team , whose vision and expertise continue to help shape the long-term ecological future of The Grounds.

Most people in Winston-Salem know Silas Creek as a road.

But just beneath it, there’s a creek that’s been here all along.

The master planning team for The Grounds saw its potential despite decades of neglect, and decided early and enthusiastically on shaping the project around it rather than treating it as an afterthought.

That shift has been carried forward through thoughtful planning and engineering by and , craftsmanship and care in the
field from , support and partnership from the and , and the shared vision of co-developers and .

During Forsyth Creek Week, we’re especially grateful for the chance to restore, reveal, and reconnect this part of Silas Creek 💧

From Winston-Salem to Atlanta, Addy Parker’s love for the Deacs runs deep. 🖤💛

As a Wake Forest grad, Alumni Council member, and longtime WFU Atlanta Board of Directors leader — she’s spent years building community. And as the wife of Adam Parker, who works for Carter and serves as one of The Grounds’ co-developers, this vision is deeply personal.

Gamedays. Gatherings. New traditions. We’re so excited to see so many Wake Forest alumni leaning into this project with such enthusiasm and support — whether they’ve planted roots in Winston-Salem or return each fall to cheer on the Demon Deacons.

A safer, more connected future is taking shape at University Parkway.

A new phase of connectivity improvements is happening at The Grounds — with the reimagining of the University Parkway and North Cherry Street intersection.

In partnership with , this redesign transforms a complex, fast-moving roadway into a safer, more intuitive, pedestrian-first gateway connecting , surrounding neighborhoods, and the district. The updated intersection eliminates the confusing northbound fork and introduces a single, clearly defined signalized crossing — including a dedicated pedestrian phase that temporarily stops traffic in all directions.

Expanded green space and new multi-use pathways will further strengthen the walkable network across the area.

Construction begins in early March and will conclude this summer, with the intersection remaining open throughout the work.

These updates are part of nearly $50 million in infrastructure investments supporting a long-term vision: stronger connections, safer streets, and a more welcoming, year-round gathering place ahead of Phase I delivery in Fall 2027.

It’s been just over three years since Mary Caroline Funk, Wake Forest alumna and Wake Forest Athletics Special Coordinator, first heard the vision for The Grounds. Today, as those blueprints turn into reality, she reflects on her time at Wake Forest and the lasting impact this project will have on students, alumni, fans, employees, neighbors, and visitors alike.

Connectivity at The Grounds is about more than a new pathway. It’s about strengthening the ties that bind a community together. At the heart of this project lives a shared spirit of belonging, where campus and community meet, memories are made, and traditions continue to grow.
