Maintaining the landscape of your homes and businesses has been our honor and privilege for over 20 years and we will continue to do so in the safest way possible. Safety measures are in place like temperature checks, frequent hand washing, gloves, and cleaning the trucks and tools. Every year there are conversations about trimming Crape Myrtle trees, so here are some facts to consider. I started Tewson Landscape Company in March of 2000 and have interacted with hundreds, perhaps thousands of homeowners on the subject of trimming Crape Myrtle trees. When considering trimming, the most important things to consider are the variety of tree, the location of the tree, and the preference of the customer.
There are dozens of varieties of Crape Myrtle that thrive in central Florida. Some of them grow fast and get very tall while others grow much slower and do not get very tall. Knowing the variety plays immensely into the 2nd factor, which is the location of the tree. If you have a tree that is located away from the house and other trees, then there should be no issue in letting it grow tall. If you have a variety that grows tall and is planted near a house or building, allowing it to grow tall could create issues with the branches rubbing against the structure. In this case annual trimming would be recommended. The final and most important factor is customer preference. If you would like to have a small to mid-sized tree that looks almost the same every year, then annual trimming is recommended. Many landscapes already have tall varieties of trees in the layout, so keeping the Crape Myrtles as a nice mid-size layer will help keep a balanced appearance. If you prefer a tree that gets taller each year then go ahead and skip the trimming. Never trim a Crape Myrtle just because you think you have to, and never skip trimming them just because you think you're not supposed to. Think about the variety, location, and prefered look you are going for and then decide whether or not to trim. Annual trimming will neither promote nor minimize blooming, unless you trim too late in the season. If you trim late (after the springtime new growth has already flushed out) then you will miss out on the springtime blooming cycle and will have to wait until summer to see color. The best time to trim is a week before or after the February full moon, which this year (2020) takes place February 9th. Trimming too early in the Winter season will sometimes create a situation where the top 5 or 6 inch tip of the trimmed tree will freeze later on in the season and the new growth will flush out below that dead tip instead of at the top. When trimming, it is recommended to trim several inches above last years cut. This will create an attractive and natural looking antler effect when the new growth comes out. Cutting at the same place as last years cut will create an unsightly k**b or "fist".
DISCLAIMER! The instructions that I have provided here are by no means an exhaustive explanation of every possible scenario, but simply are a few thoughts from my experience that hopefully are helpful in your landscape decisions.
