People often ask why I chose to become involved in breeding Cane Corsos. For me, it was never about producing puppiesāit was about preserving everything I fell in love with about the breed while trying to improve the things that broke my heart.
My journey started with my rescue Cane Corso, Hemi. She came into my life when she needed someone, and over the months we had together she became so much more than just a dog. She was family. Then cancer took her from me. It had spread to her lymph nodes, and even the chemotherapy that was meant to help eventually damaged other parts of her. Losing Hemi was the hardest goodbye Iāve ever had to make, and she was the first personal pet I ever had to euthanize. That experience changed me forever.
After losing Hemi, I knew I wanted another Cane Corso. As someone involved in rescue, I struggled with the idea of buying a puppy, but eventually I welcomed Nitro into my life.
Nitro was anything but easy. As a young puppy he had severe behavioral issues and was incredibly difficult to manage. We invested thousands of dollars in professional training and spent countless hours working with him. Today, heās a stable, loyal dog who proved that genetics matter, but so does responsible training and dedication.
Unfortunately, Nitro also developed significant hip problems at a young age. Watching another dog I loved deal with inherited orthopedic issues reinforced something Iād already learned with Hemi: temperament and health should never be left to chance.
Those experiences shaped my philosophy as a breeder.
My goal isnāt simply to produce Cane Corso puppies. My goal is to produce dogs with stable, confident temperaments, sound structure, and the best chance at long, healthy lives. Every breeding should be planned with purpose, not convenience.
When I found the male I chose to pair with my female, it wasnāt because of color or popularity. It was because he represented the qualities I value mostācorrect structure, a stable temperament, athletic ability, and the kind of mind that makes a Cane Corso an incredible family companion and working dog.
I believe responsible breeding starts long before puppies are born. It starts with selecting the right dogs, completing health testing, being honest about strengths and weaknesses, and breeding only when it benefits the breed as a whole.
Lucky 7 Kennel was built on loss, hard lessons, and an unwavering love for this breed. Every breeding decision I make is with one goal in mindāto produce Cane Corsos that families can trust, admire, and love for many years to come. If I can give someone a dog with the health, temperament, and soundness that every Cane Corso deserves, then Hemiās legacy continues through every puppy that leaves my home.
