🇯🇵💴 A SIMPLE GUIDE TO PAYMENT METHODS IN JAPAN (For Newcomers & Foreign Residents) 💳✨
Japan is modern and convenient, but if you're new here, the payment system can feel confusing at first.
Here’s a clear and easy guide to the most common payment methods you will see in Japan and how they actually work!
1️⃣ Cash (Genkin 現金)
💴 Still the king in many places.
Japan is one of the few developed countries where cash is still widely used.
You’ll need cash for:
✔️ Local shops
✔️ Small restaurants
✔️ Clinics or hospitals
✔️ Old-style apartments
✔️ Vending machines (some)
👉 Tip: Always carry a little cash for emergencies.
2️⃣ Credit / Debit Cards (VISA, MasterCard, JCB, etc.)
💳 Cards are accepted in most big stores and chain restaurants.
But some small shops still prefer cash.
If you have a foreign card, it usually works—but:
⚠️ Some ATMs may reject it
⚠️ Some stores accept ONLY Japanese-issued cards
👉 Tip: AEON, 7/11, and JP Bank ATMs are foreign-card friendly.
3️⃣ IC Cards (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA)
🚉 Originally for trains, but now used for shopping!
You can pay with IC cards at:
✔️ Convenience stores
