Our favorite stop on our recent Mediterranean cruise was beautiful Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille. Sitting high above the city and overlooking the Mediterranean, the Basilica felt both majestic and peaceful. We were fortunate to enjoy wonderful weather and, unlike Rome or Genoa, Marseille felt relaxed and not overwhelmingly crowded.
Inside the Basilica, the mosaics, architecture, and atmosphere were breathtaking. We took countless photos, but the true feeling of standing there is impossible to capture completely.
Marseille also brought to mind the stories of Alexandre Dumas and his famous novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Just off the coast sits the legendary Château d'If, the island prison that inspired the fictional imprisonment and escape of Edmond Dantès. Seeing these places in person made the history and literature come alive.
Marseille surprised us — rich in history, beautiful views, welcoming energy, and far less hectic than some of the larger ports. Definitely one of the highlights of our journey.
Nuestro último puerto en nuestro crucero por el Mediterráneo fue la hermosa ciudad de Marseille, y sin duda uno de los grandes momentos del viaje fue visitar la impresionante Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde.
Con sus vistas panorámicas del Mediterráneo y de toda la ciudad, es fácil entender por qué este lugar es tan especial para locales y visitantes. El clima estuvo perfecto y, a diferencia de otros destinos como Roma o Génova, disfrutamos de una experiencia mucho más tranquila y relajada, sin grandes multitudes.
Además, Marsella está llena de historia y literatura. Muy cerca de sus costas se encuentra el famoso Château d’If, que inspiró a Alexandre Dumas en su legendaria novela The Count of Monte Cristo. Imaginar las historias de escape y aventura mientras navegábamos por esta región hizo la visita aún más especial.
Don y yo entramos a la Basílica y quedamos maravillados con su belleza, sus detalles y la atmósfera tan espiritual del lugar. ¡Tomamos muchísimas fotos que pronto compartiremos!
