Powerful message.

If residency and voter eligibility are important enough to justify strict voting laws for ordinary citizens, then those same standards should be applied equally to politicians. When questions arise about a candidate's residency or voting history, they should be investigated thoroughly regardless of party affiliation. Equal enforcement is what gives election laws credibility.

Had one of those days ... stressful, running behind, and trying to make it to my granddaughter's playoff game on time. I called Melo's Pizza & Pasta hoping to request a special accommodation that normally isn't offered.
The first person I spoke with was Sam, the hostess ... who I now affectionately refer to as the "Director of First Impressions." Sam kindly explained that company policy didn't allow them to prepare a dine-in meal before a guest arrived, although they could prepare it to go. I completely understood the policy and appreciated that she was simply following her training. I asked if I could speak with the manager to request an exception.
Sam graciously connected me with Melina, the manager. I explained that I understood and respected the policy, but I was only nine minutes away and truly needed the meal ready when I arrived. Melina listened, understood my situation, and thoughtfully agreed to make an exception.
When I arrived, Sam greeted me warmly, had my table ready, and my dish was waiting for me exactly as promised. I ordered the Burrata Bruschetta with tomato jam, arugula, and extra virgin olive oil ... absolutely delicious. 🤌
Sam and I enjoyed a lovely conversation, and Melina later stopped by my table. I thanked them both for their kindness and flexibility. Then came the biggest surprise of all. When I asked for my bill, they refused to take my money. I insisted, but was told there wasn't even a ticket created for the order. I was genuinely awestruck by such unexpected generosity and hospitality.

Melo's has long been one of my favorite places to dine, whether in Brentwood, Danville, or Pleasant Hill. Our entire family has favorite dishes, favorite memories, and countless positive experiences there. But on this particular day, their kindness meant even more than usual.

Thank you, Sam, Melina, and the mystery host whose name I unfortunately didn't catch. Your hospitality turned a stressful day into one I'll remember with gratitude.

And for anyone wondering how the day ended ... my granddaughter's team won in overtime. Thanks to the kindness of the Melo's staff, I made it there with a full stomach, a grateful heart, and just in time to cheer her on. Some days really do turn out perfect.

While the most famous historical documents were not at risk, a number of artworks, artifacts, and historic objects in the Capitol were damaged during the January 6 attack.

Some examples include:
A plaster cast of the Senate seal was damaged.
Historic furniture, mirrors, and decorative fixtures in the Capitol were broken or vandalized.
Artwork and statuary were defaced with blood, chemical irritants, or other substances and required conservation work.
Display cases containing historical items were damaged.
Windows, doors, and architectural features of the Capitol itself ... an historic landmark and museum in its own right ... were smashed or destroyed.

One particularly notable loss involved a 19th-century marble pedestal supporting a bust of President Andrew Jackson, which was damaged during the riot.

Conservators also spent months cleaning and restoring artwork, sculptures, and historic surfaces throughout the building.

The larger concern among historians and preservationists was what could have happened. The Capitol houses significant historical art collections, portraits of former Speakers and presidents, sculptures, and artifacts connected to the nation's history.
Had rioters gained access to additional secured areas or had fires broken out, the damage could have been far more extensive.

The history surrounding the Lincoln Memorial is far more complicated than many Americans realize. The memorial was dedicated in 1922 at a segregated ceremony where Black attendees were largely confined to separate sections. At the same time, speakers praised reconciliation between white Northerners and Southerners while largely ignoring the ongoing denial of civil rights to Black Americans.
This occurred during the Jim Crow era, when many of the promises of Reconstruction had already been dismantled through voter suppression, segregation, racial violence, public hangings and discriminatory laws. The contradiction is striking: a monument honoring Abraham Lincoln stood as a symbol of freedom while millions of Americans were still being denied the equal protection and citizenship rights Lincoln fought to preserve.
Understanding this history does not diminish the memorial's significance. It helps us better understand the long struggle to make the nation's founding ideals apply to everyone, not just a privileged few.
