Did you know the Anglo Trading Estate started life as a brewery in 1864? 🍺

The impressive Victorian building was once the Anglo-Bavarian Brewery, thought by many to be the first place lager was brewed in the UK. At its peak, beer from Shepton Mallet was exported all over the world – from Australia to South America.

After World War II the site was transformed into the Anglo Trading Estate, which continues to support local businesses today. A fascinating piece of Shepton Mallet history right on our doorstep!

A fantastic piece of Shepton Mallet history 🍺

This original “Anglo Ales” enamel sign comes from the old brewery here in town. The Anglo Bavarian Brewery was once one of the largest breweries in the West Country, exporting its ales far and wide before brewing ended in the early 1900s.

You can still see the bold Victorian lettering and the line of bottles showcasing the different ales they produced — a real snapshot of local industrial heritage. The wear and rust just add to its character and tell the story of its age.

Amazing to think this was once proudly displayed to advertise Shepton’s famous ales!

Last year, one of our key projects was repairing sections of our roof — and what a transformation it’s been!

Our incredible maintenance team worked tirelessly through the height of summer to carefully replace the roof, showing real dedication and craftsmanship every step of the way. The results speak for themselves, and most importantly, this work helps ensure the building is protected and preserved for generations to come.

Have you ever wondered how many original features are still left inside the Anglo? đź‘€

The historic Anglo-Bavarian Brewery has seen an incredible amount of change over the years. The building was requisitioned by the government during both World Wars, and during those periods many of its original contents and equipment were removed.

However, not everything was lost. We’ve worked hard to preserve some of the building’s iconic industrial features — including these impressive boilers. While they’re not part of the original 1860s brewery installation, they were most likely installed during the mid-20th century and remain an important part of the site’s working history.

Every pipe, valve and rivet tells a story of how this remarkable building has adapted over time.

We’re proud to be custodians of such an important piece of local heritage — and to keep its story alive for future generations.
