SYMPTOM VS DEFECT
For us, we think its imperative to cure the root cause. Here you can see the symptom is damp plaster. Unfortunately, we didn't pick up the defect until after the wall had been plastered! Doh! So after noticing the damp coming through the fresh plaster, we had to do some further investigation to find the real problem. Turned out that when the house had been repointed, they had either missed or chosen not to repoint behind the soil pipe. We had to remove the soil pipe, repoint, and then replaster. Now we're more vigilant of these potential issues when viewing. Hopefully, now you can be too!
