🐛Garden tip - don’t clean up your garden beds until nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees for about a week, usually mid April or early May. Although they may look messy, they’re creating habitat for all kinds of critters, notably many of the pollinators your garden depends on. 🐝

Well executed landscaping can increase a home’s value by an estimated 5-15%, so give those critters a fighting chance and let them rest a bit longer. Your property values will thank you. 🦋

Full disclosure, I never have the patience to wait to clean up my gardens…but you’re supposed to!

Photos never do justice to real live actual homes🏡. I’ve had the pleasure of touring this utterly wonderful old farmhouse in Slaterville several times now and I would recommend that you tour it as well if for nothing other than to see a beautifully maintained piece of Tompkins county history. I want to live here but darn it, I’ve got my own house. The property just went on the market today and will no doubt be snapped up quickly. 🌤️When the weather starts to warm up, I take every opportunity to give my house a little fresh air. If it’s cold, I open my door just for a minute, but sometimes, if it’s 50 degrees or more, I’ll leave the doors open for hours. The house feels so musty after the long winter and I relish the living, breathing air. 🌬️

I recently discovered that I’m not the only one doing this, there’s even a word for it in German! Lüften, meaning “to air,” simply involves opening windows and doors to replace stuffy, stale air with fresh air. Maybe it’s not the most environmentally sustainable thing to do, being that it is rather wasteful if the heat is on, but a little bit of fresh air sure does feel good. It’s good for your house too, creating cool airflow can prevent the growth of some molds and fungi. 🍄‍🟫

There’s also another AMAZING German word I recently discovered (which really deserves a post off of its own). “Kaffee und kuchen” (coffee and cake) is a German ritual where friends, family, or coworkers will meet for an hour or two in the afternoon to enjoy coffee, cake, and socializing. What??! Can we bring this ritual to Ithaca?? Who’s with me? :)

I’ve been told that I’m mostly of German stock, but I think this proves it. I need to visit my ancestral land and eat some cake in the fresh air🍰☀️☕️
