The restored courtrooms of the Durban High Court balance the weight of their heritage with the demands of a contemporary judicial environment. Dark timber panelling sits alongside lighter acoustic cladding. The original arched windows bring natural light into spaces that must be both dignified and functional. The ceiling detail holds the room together without competing with what happens below it.

This is what heritage architecture looks like when it is done with care — not preserved as a museum piece, but restored as a living, working institution that South Africans will use for generations to come.

Watching the Durban High Court take shape on site is one of those reminders of why the detail work matters. Every decision made months earlier in the documentation phase — the curvature of the facade panels, the geometry of the spiral staircase, the relationship between the heritage stonework and the new timber cladding — is now being tested against reality.

The atrium is emerging. The courtrooms are taking form. The careful distinction between old and new — between the restored heritage shell and the contemporary intervention — is becoming visible in the materials and the light.

Designing a court building means designing for everyone — simultaneously and without compromise. 📐

The Durban High Court accommodates five distinct user groups, each requiring completely separate circulation through the building: the public, the legal community, judges, administrative personnel, and detainees in custody. These groups must never cross paths in ways that compromise security, dignity or the integrity of the judicial process.

The circulation concept resolves this across five floors — a secure judge's zone, a controlled public zone, and a secure criminal core — all coordinated around a central atrium that draws natural light and ventilation through the building via the stack effect.

Getting this right required months of detailed design development before a single structural decision could be made. At Design Scape Architects, complexity is not a constraint. It is the brief.

The design concept for the Durban High Court is rooted in movement. 🌀

Not just the literal movement of people through the building — judges, the public, legal practitioners, detainees, administrative staff, each on their own secure and separated path — but metaphorical movement.

Like the ocean that defines Durban's context, the building receives an in-flow of disorder, dispute and injustice — and channels it toward clarity, resolution and justice. The architecture becomes a metaphor for the process it houses.

The concept draws from African cultural heritage — the concentric rhythms of Zulu beads and bowls, the symbolic language of Andinkra, the form of the African drum — translated into a contemporary architectural expression that is uncluttered, unadorned and legible.

Truth and justice demand nothing less.

What is a schedule of accommodation? 📋

It is the complete list of spaces a building must contain — every room, its function, its minimum area, and its relationship to the spaces around it. A boardroom needs to be near the reception, not the loading bay. A sterile theatre needs separation from general circulation. A primary classroom needs a certain floor area per learner.

The schedule of accommodation is one of the first documents produced in any well-run project. It translates the client's operational requirements into spatial terms before a single line is drawn — and it governs every design decision that follows.

Get it wrong and the building never quite works, no matter how well it is designed.
