When you design a home, you design for one family. When you design a public building, you design for everyone. ποΈ
The Hankey Magistrates Court is a civic building in the truest sense β a space where the justice system meets the public it serves. Every person who enters does so under different circumstances, often at significant moments in their lives. The architecture must accommodate all of them with equal dignity.
Public buildings of this nature carry a responsibility that goes far beyond function. They must communicate authority without intimidation, efficiency without coldness, and permanence without rigidity. They must serve the court officials, legal practitioners, accused, witnesses, families and members of the public β each of whom moves through the space differently and needs different things from it.
At Design Scape Architects, we approach civic and public architecture with the understanding that these buildings are not just facilities. They are institutions. And institutions deserve to be designed with care.
