If the braai is going, there really should be braaibroodjies. 🔥

Today is Heritage Day, and we couldn’t think of a better excuse to share one of those simple South African favourites that belongs beside the braai.

A braaibroodjie is essentially a toasted sandwich cooked over the coals — but anyone who grew up eating them will tell you it’s much more than that. 😄

For a traditional version, you’ll need:

🍞 White bread
🧈 Butter
🧀 Cheddar cheese
🍅 Sliced tomato
🧅 Onion
🥭 Chutney
🧂 Salt & pepper

Butter the outside of your bread, spread chutney on the inside and add cheese, tomato and onion. Season, close your sandwiches and place them in a hinged braai grid.

Braai over moderate coals, turning regularly, until the bread is beautifully golden and crisp and the cheese has melted.

Then comes the difficult part: waiting for them to cool down enough to eat. 😉

Ever wondered what two giraffes are doing when they start swinging those enormous necks at each other? 🦒🦒

We came across these two in the road on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, and they were putting on quite a display.

This behaviour is known as necking. Male giraffes use their long, powerful necks — and the weight of their heads — to spar with one another. Sometimes it’s relatively gentle, almost like they’re practising, while more serious bouts between adult males can be much more forceful.

It’s part of the way males test strength and establish dominance.

Watching it in person is quite something. One minute they’re standing peacefully beside one another, and the next those necks start swinging!

We stayed back and let them finish their disagreement in their own time. After all, when two giraffes are occupying the road, they definitely have right of way. 😄

Just another ordinary drive through the estate that turned into something worth stopping for.

You can feel the season starting to turn in Hoedspruit. 🌿☀️

September brings warmer mornings, longer afternoons and those first days when the pool suddenly starts looking very inviting again.

September has painted the greenbelt yellow. 💛🌿

The knobthorns are flowering, and at the moment they seem to be everywhere.

Their soft yellow blooms against the golden grass are one of those seasonal changes that completely transform the landscape. And because we’ve had such good grass this year, walking along the greenbelt right now is particularly beautiful — layers of gold, yellow and green stretching through the estate.

It’s easy to think of the bush as being mostly shades of brown and green, but every season has its own colour palette.

Right now, yellow is definitely winning. 💛

If you’re visiting Hoedspruit this month, take some time to explore on foot and look up as well as around you. September doesn’t stay dressed like this for long.

Spot the sparrowhawk. 👀

At first glance… just a tree.

Look again.

Tucked away among the branches is a juvenile Little Sparrowhawk, sitting quietly and watching the world go by. (Probably watching us too, camera and all.)

It’s one of the things we love most about the estate. The bush doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it whispers. A bird hidden in a tree. A duiker slipping through the undergrowth. A chameleon crossing the road. The more you slow down, the more you notice.

The one thing you’ll wish you could take home. 🔥

It’s not the pool.
Not the villa.
Not even the wildlife.

It’s that first moment the fire catches.

Dinner can wait. Nobody’s checking their phone. The only sounds are the crackle of the flames, birds settling in for the night, and something calling out in the bush that you can’t quite place. Somehow, not knowing is part of the magic.

There’s something about sitting around a fire that reminds you how little you actually need.

It’s funny how it’s the simplest moments that stay with you the longest.

Ever seen a caterpillar traffic jam?

We spotted this one while driving through the estate the other day — a long line of caterpillars, nose to tail, following each other like they're queuing for the Kruger gate on a long weekend.

It's actually pretty clever. They're processionary caterpillars, and they travel like this using silk trails and a bit of gentle nudging, so nobody gets left behind. Safety in numbers, bush style.

They’re on their way to burrow into the soil, where they’ll pupate before emerging as moths. The adult stage only lasts a short while, so this remarkable journey is really the main event.

One thing though - don’t touch. Those tiny hairs are part of their defence system and can cause quite an itchy reaction. They’re fascinating to watch, but best admired from a respectful distance… just like most things in the bush. 😉
