Japan is developing floating house designs that automatically lift off the ground during earthquakes, reducing structural damage and improving occupant safety.
The system uses air pressure or hydraulic mechanisms that activate when seismic sensors detect tremors. The house temporarily floats a few centimeters above its foundation, isolating it from ground movement.
Unlike traditional seismic reinforcement, this approach focuses on decoupling the building from the earthquake itself. Once shaking stops, the house gently settles back into place.
