AI isn't coming for your job. But someone who knows how to use it might be. 👀

Lebo Ruwatu puts it plainly. The opportunity is there, especially for small businesses. No accountant? There's an AI tool for that. Not a designer? Canva exists. The fourth industrial revolution isn't a threat, it's a train. And you can choose to get on it.

The key question isn’t “Should I be VAT-registered?”
It’s “Who actually carries the VAT cost?”
If your client can claim it back, VAT works in your favour.

If they can’t, it comes straight out of your margin. This is why good advice, and understanding your numbers, matters more than ticking boxes.

Smart growth isn’t about looking big. It’s about staying liquid, compliant, and in control.

📌 Always speak to a registered tax practitioner before registering for VAT.

How involved should a client actually be in the creative process? 🤔

Omolemo, video editor and storyteller, has a clear answer, about 30%. Enough to keep the vision aligned. Not so much that it overrides the very expertise they hired you for.

Earnings Before Interest (EBITDA), Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation, and it’s one of the first numbers banks look at when assessing your business.

Why? Because EBITDA shows how your business performs before financing structures and tax decisions. It helps lenders understand whether your operations generate enough cash to comfortably service debt.

You can be profitable on paper and still struggle to secure funding if your EBITDA is weak. That’s why understanding this number matters long before you apply for a loan or plan to scale.

Fruit-named brands are quietly winning in South Africa. And it’s not by accident.

The SME takeaway?
Your brand name doesn’t need to sound “big” to be powerful.

It needs to be clear, human, and easy to remember.
In 2026, trust is built faster by brands that feel accessible, not intimidating.

Running a business is a constant stream of pressure. Clients pushing back, costs rising, plans changing. What matters most isn’t what happens, but how quickly (and thoughtfully) you respond.

That space Frankl refers to is the pause before reacting. The moment where you decide whether to discount out of fear, change strategy too fast, or stay anchored to what actually matters.

Strong businesses protect that space.
They respond with intention, not urgency.
They separate noise from signal.

In unpredictable markets, your real advantage isn’t control, it’s clarity.
And clarity always starts with a pause.

At 3AM, you remember one of Apple’s most controversial decisions.

In 2016, Apple removed most ports from the MacBook.
No USB-A. No HDMI. No SD card. Users were frustrated. Critics were loud. But Apple wasn’t chasing convenience, they were forcing a shift.

One cable. One standard. One way forward.
The result?
An ecosystem that simplified manufacturing, pushed adoption of new tech, and reshaped how laptops are designed years later.

The lesson?
- Not every feature cut is a downgrade
- Removing friction for your future customer may upset today’s user
- Simplicity often looks like loss before it looks like leadership

At 3AM, the thought lands:
What if your next breakthrough isn’t adding something… but having the courage to remove it?

Thinking about a career in law? It takes more than a degree.

Three things separate those who excel from those who don't: love for the profession, a drive for justice, and a genuine desire to help people.
Without all three? The work will eventually hollow you out.

Burn rate isn’t a Silicon Valley term, it’s a cash reality for every South African SME.

If you don’t know how many months your business can survive at its current spend, you’re not managing risk. You’re guessing.

Understanding your burn rate helps you make smarter decisions about hiring, scaling, and timing growth. Especially in a high-cost environment.
