It’s easy to think of a will as something you prepare once and then file away. Life doesn’t stand still, though, and the document that suited you a few years ago may no longer reflect the life you’re living now.

A will is one of the clearest ways to record what you would like to happen to your estate and make a difficult time a little easier for the people you care about.

It can name the people you would like to inherit from your estate and nominate an executor to administer it. If you are the sole guardian of a minor child, you may also appoint someone to become the child’s guardian after your death.

If you die without a valid will, your estate will be distributed according to the rules of intestate succession. Those rules may not reflect what you would have chosen for your family.
