The purpose of a bathymetric survey is to describe the physical characteristics of the bottom of a water body. Bathymetric data can be used to construct a map showing depth contours and underwater structure and is used to calculate the volume and mean and a maximum depth of a water body. This information is important for evaluating the habitat suitability of a waterbody for various aquatic species, assessing the sensitivity of that habitat to development (e.g. coldwater habitat for lake trout), locating critical habitat features (e.g. spawning shoals), and selecting sampling sites for other aquatic surveys. The information may also be used in the application of thermal habitat models.
