10 FACTS ABOUT DWC AIRPORT
PRESENT
โ Al Maktoum International Airport or DWC (Dubai World Central) operates since July 27, 2010 for cargo traffic. Passenger flights started in 2013.
โ The airport was named after Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the former ruler of Dubai.
โ Located in the south of the city in Dubai South, 45km from Dubai International Airport (DXB). Nearby: Palm Jebel Ali, Dubai Investments Park, Emaar South and Expo City Dubai.
โ Now Al Maktoum accepts cargo flights, as well as passenger flights of 10+ airlines: Air Poland, Bulgaria Air, China Southern Airlines, Pobeda, S7, Ural Airlines, Utair, etc.
โ Due to the low passenger traffic, there are no queues at the airport, registration is very fast. There is only one runway 5km long and 12 gates.
FUTURE
โ In April 2024, the Dubai Government approved plans to build a mega passenger terminal at DWC at a cost of ~$35 billion.
โ DWC will be 5 times larger than DXB airport. Its area will increase to 70kmยฒ. The capacity will be 260 million passengers per year โ 10 times more than now.
โ The airport will have 5 runways and 400 gates and will be able to handle up to 12 million tons of cargo per year.
โ The DWC will include an automatic people-movement system and an integrated ground transportation hub for roads, metro and urban air transport.
โ During the 10 years that DWC is being built, DXB will continue to operate as a hub and serve more than 100 million passengers and then will be closed.
REAL ESTATE AT DWC
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, believes that ยซthe city is coming to the airport rather than the airport moving out of the city.
The emirate will build a city around the airport in Dubai South. Demand is expected to reach 100,000+ properties over the next 10 years.
According to experts, the increase in real estate prices in Dubai South will reach up to 10โ15% in 2024. Prices will rise faster when the airport is renovated.
