Some of us have called the UAE home for decades. We have built our careers here and sold homes to families from all over the world. But today, let’s stop and ask ourselves…

…What if December 2, 1971, was just another Tuesday?

What if the Rulers didn’t agree to become “a single people” and the Union never formed?

If that handshake between Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid hadn’t happened, the reality we live in today would look very different.

We wouldn’t see the Etihad Rail cutting through the desert to connect Fujairah to Abu Dhabi. We would likely see border controls and customs checks just to drive from Dubai to Sharjah.

We wouldn’t have the UAE Dirham in our pockets. We might still be juggling Bahraini Dinars in the capital and Riyals in the northern emirates. We would be dealing with seven different economies instead of one stable market pegged to the dollar.

We wouldn’t feel the incredible safety we enjoy today. The research shows we live in one of the safest countries on earth because the leaders unified the military and police in 1976. Without that, we might have seen seven different defense forces and internal rivalries instead of one strong shield.

We wouldn’t see the world’s most powerful passport. We would see seven small states struggling to be heard on the global stage.

We celebrate Eid Al Etihad because that vision won.

We celebrate because the “United” theme isn’t just a word on a banner. It is the reason we can live, work, and raise our families here in peace.
