Dear Haigers and Friends, (bad castellano abajo)
Ten years ago, I decided to buy a piece of property in Buenos Aires. My dream was to build an apartment- hotel where people would feel a sense of community, whether they stayed for 3 nights or three years. But I knew nothing about construction or hotels.
Through family friends, I met an elderly man called Simon. He helped me navigate the crazy that is Argentina and introduced me to two talented architects- Fernando and Ana Laura. One built the building, the other gave the inside a sense of style. Two years later, The Haig opened its doors to the public…but on the day that it did, Simon passed away from cancer. I still believe he held on just to see me open.
Over the years, we managed to create that place I dreamed of. Young and fun and where long timers helped new arrivals navigate the city. If you wanted to meet your neighbour you could just go down to the lounge or the pool. That sense of a “family away from home” was what gave us our success and still has us ranked # 1 on Trip Advisor.
In January 2020, I moved back to Toronto to be closer to my family…and today It is with mixed emotions that I’m announcing that as of August 2020 the Haig is closed as
I have sold the building to a group of investors led by those same two architects.
It is such a bitter-sweet feeling not to be “Nick from The Haig” anymore. But it is time to start my next chapter and decide again what I want to be when I grow up. I had an amazing staff who ran the building for me. I had amazing guests from every corner of the world and many of you have become great friends. And we had some great parties… God will I miss those parties. But most of all, I will miss those early morning Sundays when I would sneak my dog in and would sit by the pool while the building slept and take it all in.
There are too many names to thank. But I have to mention my superintendent Ale, who was there from before we were open and made the best asados/bbqs for the guests. And my two general managers over the years: Cata for helping me get the business up and running and Nati for making me laugh and putting up with my neuroses in the office and making it very clear she always had everything under control. I could not have done it without you and I will always be in your debt.
It is with great sadness that I say goodbye to Argentina. I will miss you all and thank you for the best decade I could ask for. I will see you again…somewhere. I’d like to think that “Haig night out” parties can continue in a few corners of the globe once the world gets back to normal…and who knows, maybe one day another Haig building will pop up somewhere.

PS. In a nice sense of karma, those architects, whom have become my friends, have told me they have decided to keep the spirit of the Haig going, but will call it “The Simon”

Queridos Haigers, Queridos amigos,
Hace diez años, decidí comprar una propiedad en Buenos Aires. Soñé en construir un apart-hotel, un lugar donde, sin importar si se quedaban tres días o tres años, los huéspedes podían sentirse parte de una comunidad. Lamentablemente, no sabía nada acerca de la hotelería, y muchos menos lo que significaba construir un edificio. Gracias a amigos y a familiares, conocí un señor mayor llamado Simon. Simon me fue de una ayuda increíble en lo que fue navegar la locura de este país, y me introdujo a dos arquitectos muy talentosos: Fernando y Ana Laura. Fernando construyó el edificio, Ana Laura aportó el estilo que marcó la identidad al edificio. Dos años después, The Haig abrió sus puertas al público... pero ese mismo día, nuestro querido Simon perdió su batalla contra el cancer. Tengo la sensación de que quiso esperar hasta el último momento, a que The Haig abra, para poder verlo.
Pasaron los años, y logramos crear ese lugar del cual había soñado. Un lugar jóven, divertido, en el cual los veteranos del edificio ayudaban a los más nuevos navegar la ciudad. Si uno quería conocer a sus vecinos, no hacía falta más que bajar al lounge o a la pileta. La sensación de una 'familia lejos de casa' fue lo que nos brindó tanto éxito, por el cual seguimos siendo #1 en Trip Advisor.
En enero del 2020, decidí mudarme de vuelta a Toronto para estar cerca de mi familia... y hoy doy la noticia, con sentimientos muy encontrados, que el 1 de agosto vendí The Haig a un grupo de inversores liderados por aquellos dos arquitectos que construyeron el edificio. Me entristece no ser más "Nick from The Haig", pero a la vez estoy contento de poder encarar esta nueva etapa en mi vida, y finalmente decidir qué quiero ser cuando sea grande. Pude contar con empleados increíbles que manejaron el negocio, tuvimos huéspedes de todas partes del mundo, y muchos son ahora queridos amigos. Y qué fiestas tuvimos... las voy a extrañar! Pero lo que más voy a extrañar, son los domingos a la mañana, cuando traía a mi perrita Cora a escondidas, nos sentábamos al lado de la pileta a disfrutar lo que se construyó en equipo, mientras el edificio entero dormía.
Hay demasiadas personas a quien debería darle las gracias. Pero tengo que mencionar a mi encargado, Ale, quien formó parte del equipo antes de hayamos siquiera abierto las puertas, y supo ponerse la 10 y hacer unos asados exquisitos. Y a mis dos general managers a lo largo de los años: Cata, quien me ayudó arrancar el negocio, y Nati por hacerme reír y bancar mi neurosis en la oficina. No podría haber hecho esto sin ustedes, y les estoy eternamente agradecidos.
No es sin una gran tristeza que les digo adios. Gracias por una década inolvidable, los voy a extrañar, y los veré de nuevo... en algún lugar. Me gustaría pensar que las fiestas "Haig night out" van a continuar en algunos rincones del mundo una vez que todo regrese a la normalidad. PD, una linda vuelta de tuerca que nos brindó el karma: aquellos dos arquitectos, quienes se han convertidos en amigos, me informaron que han decidido mantener el espíritu de The Haig, re-bautizandolo "The Simon".
