🏡 FAQ FRIDAY | Joint Tenants vs Tenants in Common – What's the Difference?
When buying property with someone else, one of the decisions you'll make is how you'll own the property together.
The two most common ownership structures are Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common—and while they sound similar, they have important differences.
Joint Tenants
• Everyone owns the property equally.
• If one owner passes away, their share automatically passes to the surviving owner(s).
Tenants in Common
• Each owner holds a nominated share of the property.
• That share forms part of their estate and is distributed according to their Will.
Neither option is automatically better than the other. The right choice depends on your personal circumstances, future plans and estate planning goals.
Why It Matters
The way you choose to own your property today can have important legal and practical consequences in the future.
If you're unsure which option is right for you, your Conveyancer or Accountant can help explain your options.
