Last week our directors and architects took a whirlwind trip to London and Scotland. We visited art gallaries to take photos of the bins, heritage buildings to see where century old stone meets modern glass, sky high observation decks to watch the people and hotels to play with the light switches. All to build a better building in SA. Huge thanks to WalterBrooke Architects and Arup for organising walk throughs and backstage tours of London’s newest buildings. Special thanks to the Freemasons of Rosslyn lodge for a very special tour of one of the oldest!

Here's the ground floor of Keystone. If it looks like a tight squeeze for cars, you're right. It is! Vehicle access is one of the reasons we wanted to avoid building apartments. Like it or not, Adelaide is still a "motor city", and a resident would reasonably expect to have a car and a car park. Instead, the focus is on foot traffic and making it easier for everyone to walk from Rundle Street to North Terrace and back.

We propose to restore the Lodge and make it accessible rather than hidden away, improving access for everyone. One of the changes to the front of 254 North Terrace is the addition of dual access ramps on either side of the entrance. Just so you know – only one is required, so why two?
Firstly, equality of access isn't just about physical access, it's about respect. Is a ramp just ticking a box or was it always designed to welcome everyone?
Secondly, could you keep foot traffic clear on North Terrace? We would love to see the building host a museum that children visit. A ramp is a safe place to assemble a few classes before the big reveal.
Thirdly, it just looks better!

The original building, front tower and rear hall were completed in 1927. When it was completed, the hall was one of the tallest buildings in the city and one of the tallest, if not the tallest, on North Terrace. If you visit South Australia's country towns, you'll find four things: a town hall, a pub, a church and a Freemason lodge.

There is no doubt about it: this building will change our skyline. How it looks at night is a secret, but the facade is designed to disappear into the sky. Keystone is all about quiet confidence, during the day...

We approached the History Trust of South Australia nearly three years ago with the idea of a museum of South Australia's history; we thought it would be great to host artifacts currently hidden away and to make sure interstate and international guests got to see that SA was more than just the best wine in the world, amazing beaches, ecotourism and great food. Little did we know that a museum that tells OUR stories and OUR history and celebrates OUR people has been an ambition of the History Trust since its formation. AMOSAH - Adelaide Museum of South Australia's History IS a possibility. It's up to the government.. and you!

The thought for Keystone was a "vertical street" from day one, it has been important to make sure that the replacement for the hall was an open and public place. We even investigated everything from housing to student accommodation to health care. Located on our city's cultural boulevard, so close to public transport, Rundle Street restaurants and Rundle Mall shopping we decided on a hotel offering that would deliver a world-class wellness and business centre together with a public observation deck.

The journey to create Keystone Adelaide started with one question - "how do we turn around the financial fortunes of South Australia's oldest association and retain their heritage?"
