Binti Jua, a gorilla at Brookfield Zoo, became famous in 1996 after an incredible act of kindness. A three-year-old boy had climbed over the wall of her enclosure and accidentally fallen nearly seven meters to the ground. He was left unconscious, with a fractured hand and a deep cut on his face.

Panicked zoo visitors watched in fear as Binti Jua, an eight-year-old gorilla, approached the child. Many assumed the worst, expecting her to harm him. But instead, she did something extraordinary—she gently picked up the boy and cradled him in her arms as if he were her own baby. Carefully, she carried him toward the enclosure’s access door, shielding him from other curious gorillas.

When the zookeepers opened the door, Binti Jua gently laid the child on the ground and backed away, allowing the staff to retrieve him safely. The boy was rushed to the hospital and made a full recovery.

The incident sparked widespread debate. Was Binti Jua demonstrating true animal altruism, or was her behavior a result of her upbringing? Having been raised by humans after her mother rejected her, some believed her actions were a reflection of her training. Regardless, her compassion left a lasting impression on the world, cementing her legacy as one of the most remarkable gorillas in history.
