Some of you will have noticed the latest addition to Allora’s skyline. – actually, it is a very old structure has been shifted to a different place. The windmill which stood in the grounds of Allora Cottage on the corner of Arnold and Warwick Streets for about 120 years has been re-erected in the grounds of the Allora & District Historical Society museum at 53 Warwick Street thanks to the generosity of the Atkinson family.
The mill is believed to have been built in the Toowoomba Foundry pre the Southern Cross branded mills which were built from 1903. Steel towers replaced the former wooden towers about 1900 so the mill dates from about 1900 to 1903. It stood through the ownership of Allora Cottage by John Gilmore senior from 1908 to 1918, through the ownership of the Kaiser family from 1920 to 1970 and through the ownership of Mrs Whatmore and the Atkinson family from 1971 until it fell over about 15 years ago.
In 2022 the Atkinson family donated it to the Allora & District Historical Society. Jim Anderson and Garth Free have spent much time straightening and restoring the mill and last week stood it up in the grounds of the former Allora Shire Council depot.

ALLORA COTTAGE
With the recent sale of Allora Cottage by the Atkinson family it is interesting to outline some of its history. It is not known when it was built but it is known that for over 100 years it was in the hands of just two families.
The 1acre allotment on the corner of Arnold and Warwick Streets was bought by Christian Marstellar in the Government land sale of 13th July 1863. Marstellar may not have owned the land for long because in 1868 he is recorded as being issued a cattle brand at Tenterfield in NSW.
In 1877 new deeds for the allotment were issued to William Morgan. New deeds were again issued in 1908 when the land was transferred from John Smith to John Gilmore. John Gilmore senior had retired to the cottage from his Goomburra farm. After John Gilmore’s death in 1918 the trustees of his estate sold the cottage and land to Matida Kaiser, wife of August Kaiser, in September 1920.
The Kaiser family lived in Allora Cottage for nearly 50 years until Matilda Kaiser’s passing in 1969. In 1970 title for the land was transferred to her daughter Coral Shannon.
In 1971 Doreen Whatmore bought Allora Cottage, and after her death in 1990, title was transferred to her daughters Antonia (Ding) Atkinson and Victoria. The sale of the cottage in 2023 ended 52 years of ownership of the cottage by the family.
The photo from the Kaiser family shows the cottage, and also the windmill donated to the Allora Museum by the Atkinson family.

The Allora & District Historical Society thanks the Atkinson family for the donation of the old windmill from Allora Cottage. The windmill is believed to have been built in the Toowoomba Foundry pre the ‘Southern Cross’ branded mills which were produced from 1903. Steel towers replaced the former wooden towers about 1900 so that dates the Allora Cottage mill as being built between 1900 and 1903.
The old windmill will be renovated and re-erected in the grounds of the 53 Warwick Street museum.

HISTORY OF HOUSES
Allora Cottage
By its style and 10” weatherboards, Allora Cottage is one of Allora’s earliest residences, but it is not known when it was built. The 1 acre allotment on the corner of Arnold and Warwick Streets was bought in the 13th July 1863 land sale by Christian Marstellar. It is not known whether Marstellar ever lived on the block. From the NSW Brands Directory, in 1868 Christian Marstellar was living in Tenterfield.
From the deeds, the land was transferred to William Morgan in August 1877. The Allora rate books show that Morgan still owned the land in 1879. In 1908 new deeds were issued in the name of John Smith and the house and land were transferred to John Gilmore senior who retired there from his Goomburra farm. Following John Gilmore’s death in 1918 the cottage was sold in 1920 to Matilda Kaiser, wife of August Kaiser. The Kaiser family lived in Allora Cottage for nearly 50 years until Matilda’s death in December 1969. In 1971 the cottage was sold to Mrs. Whatmore and is still in the hands of her family over fifty years later.
