Having been built in 1846-1847, The Manor House now stands as one of Victoria's oldest, surviving residences. It is known as being a great example of a Victorian Regency residence, and for its high level of craftsmanship in the joinery and stone masonry which is evident throughout the home. The Manor House is still occupied as a residential home today.

The home is believed to have been used as a Police Quarters at one point with a holding cell in the basement. Bacchus Marsh was the half way point between Melbourne and Ballarat, and often used as an overnight stopover point. The original downstairs door and ventilation shaft with bars are still intact.

After Captain William Bacchus died in 1849, the property stayed in the family for a few more years until James E Crook purchased the property. His name can still be seen scratched into a pane of glass at the property with a date of 1857.

The Manor House was built in the 1840's by Captain William Bacchus. The township of Bacchus Marsh, which is around 45 minutes west of Melbourne, is named after Captain Bacchus. Although he was not the original settler in the town, he is credited with transforming the area from a swamp, into fertile land.
