Ballarat has taken out the coveted title of Victoria’s Top Tourism Town for the second time.

Crowned winner at a ceremony on Wednesday night, Ballarat edged out eight regions to win the 2023 Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards.

The annual awards, which are hosted by the Victoria Tourism Industry Council, recognise Victorian towns that create an exceptional experience for visitors through a commitment to collaboration and showcase the economic impact tourism brings to regional Victoria.

Steamrail Victoria's popular steam shuttles are returning to Ballarat this King's Birthday long weekend.

Ride the heritage steam locomotives from the Ballarat Train Station to Lal Lal and return from Saturday 10 June – Monday 12 June.

Alternatively, you can travel on a one-way transfer from Newport to Ballarat on Friday 9 June or a one-way transfer from Ballarat to Southern Cross on Monday 12 June.

Bloomin' marvelous

A new Sturt Street installation is paying tribute to the Traditional Owners of our land, the Wadawurrung People.

Unveiled ahead of this weekend's Ballarat Begonia Festival, the giant BEGONIA letters were designed by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and artist Billy O’Toole.

Here's what the artwork on each letter represents:

🌸 B – a journey across country and all coming together on Wadawurrung Country to attend the Ballarat Begonia Festival

🌸 E – ‘Wurdi Yuang’ (big hill), referring to the Wadawurrung mountain country around Black Hill and Buninyong

🌸 G – the flowing waters that give life to all and nourish country

🌸 O – healing and welcoming to country. The eucalyptus depicted welcomes you on to country and cleanses you from the feet up to keep country and people healthy as they come together in peace

🌸 N – gathering by fresh water

🌸 I – the shape and known markings of stone head spears (a traditional tool used to hunt food)

🌸 A – the many creeks and waterholes across country

You'll find the colourful installation at the intersection of Sturt and Doveton streets until 13 March.

The Ballarat Begonia Festival (City of Ballarat) runs from this Saturday 11 March until Monday 13 March at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.

The Smashing Pumpkins return to Australia with an enormous cast of guests that includes alt-rock pioneers Jane's Addiction, Aussie heroes Amyl & the Sniffers, and up and comers Redhook and Battlesnake.
