Shouldn't we already be in recession? 🏡📉

According to a recent IMF study, Australia is highly sensitive to monetary policy due to its unique housing market. Yet, our economy remains resilient—for now.

Here’s why:

1. Low fixed mortgage rates
2. High loan-to-value ratios
3. High household debt
4. Constrained housing supply
5. Possible overvalued homes

But resilience has its limits. Rising mortgage stress, eroding savings, and dwindling affordable housing options hint at a sharp economic shift ahead. The recent Neoval data shows growing weakness in Melbourne and Hobart, suggesting some regions might already be in recession.

Rate cuts might be our saving grace. Sooner is better than later.

As global economies shift, Sweden surprised us in early May with an unexpected interest rate cut despite high inflation. This trend continued with Canada and the European Central Bank following suit.

In Australia, inflation is slowly easing but remains sticky at 3.6%, above the RBA’s target of 2-3%. Our economy's growth is minimal, but a recession seems unlikely.

Will Australia join the rate cut trend soon? It's looking increasingly possible this year, but unfortunately, not this month for many mortgage holders.
