ON THIS DAY – 25th June
1847 – Melbourne was proclaimed a city by letters patent of Queen Victoria.
1852 – In June 1852, torrential rain in the Snowy Mountains caused the Murrumbidgee River to flood Gundagai, NSW, claiming 89 lives out of a population of 250. Familiar with past floods and despite the rising waters, many residents stayed in their homes. In the early hours of 25 June, a powerful torrent swept through, destroying houses and carrying people away. A rescue punt capsized, adding to the tragedy. Amid the chaos, two Aboriginal men, Yarri and Jackey Jackey, bravely navigated the raging waters in their canoes, saving 49 people. Despite their heroism, the flood left Gundagai devastated.
1867 – Bushrangers the Clarke brothers were executed in Sydney. Brothers Thomas and John Clarke were ruthless Australian bushrangers from NSW, active between 1865 and 1867. Their crimes led to the Felons' Apprehension Act (1866), which allowed bushrangers to be killed on sight. They committed at least 71 robberies, murdered multiple people—including police officers—and were suspected of killing a squad sent to capture them. After a shoot-out in April 1867, they were caught and executed at Sydney's Darlinghurst Gaol two months later, marking the end of organised gang bushranging in NSW. Some historians consider them the most violent bushrangers in Australian history.
1908 – The Art Gallery of Western Australia opened.
1912 – Landscape gardener and botanist William Guilfoyle died. Guilfoyle was a renowned landscape gardener and botanist in Victoria, best known as the architect of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. His visionary designs shaped many parks and gardens across Melbourne and regional Victoria, leaving a lasting legacy in Australian horticulture.
