Ready to discover how volunteers protect Bribie’s nesting turtles?
Discover the dedicated efforts of local volunteers working tirelessly to monitor and protect endangered loggerhead and green turtles. This presentation traces the history of our conservation program, celebrating the hard-fought successes that have laid the foundation for today’s vital work.

Attendees will gain insight into modern volunteer operations, which extend far beyond routine beach monitoring to include rapid stranding responses and community awareness initiatives. Finally, the session confronts critical future challenges, highlighting how rising beach traffic, natural predators, and a lack of regulatory enforcement threaten nesting habitats - and what must be done next to ensure these species’ survival.

The dugong is our other much loved marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. It is the only living representative of the once-diverse family Dugongidae; its closest modern relative, Steller's sea cow, was hunted to extinction in the 18th century.

The dugong is largely dependent on seagrass communities for subsistence and is thus restricted to the coastal habitats that support seagrass meadows, with the largest dugong concentrations typically occurring in wide, shallow, protected areas, such as bays, mangrove channels, the waters of large inshore islands, and inter-reefal waters. The northern waters of Australia between Shark Bay and Moreton Bay are believed to be the dugong's contemporary stronghold.

The Bribie Island Bridge toll cost 10 shillings (converted to $1 in 1966) when it opened on October 19, 1963. Nicknamed the "Ned Kelly Bridge" for its high price, it was removed on March 22, 1975, after paying off the bridge's construction costs. It remains a toll-free crossing.

Throughout its 12-year lifespan, the toll station was operated by Jack Greenhalgh. Though the government provided small concessions and discount ticket books for local Bribie Island residents, standard visitors were charged the flat fee. The final toll ticket was purchased by local resident Stan Balmer on March 22, 1975, after which the toll booths were removed.
