In Australia, the local Pelican species (Pelecanus conspicillatus) is famous for possessing the longest bill of any bird in the world, measuring up to 50 cm. Its throat pouch can expand to hold up to 13 litres of water

Despite their heavy, bulky appearance, pelicans are excellent soarers. They utilise thermal air currents to reach altitudes of up to 3,000 metres and can remain in the air for up to 24 hours

The Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is located at Woorim Beach on the eastern side of Bribie Island. Established in 1922, it is one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in Australia. It delivers critical water safety, beach patrols, and youth development programs to the local community

Active volunteer lifesavers monitor the beach every weekend and on public holidays from September to May each year. The flagged beach area is generally patrolled daily between 7:15 AM and 5:00 PM.

The Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Supporters Club operates a licensed beachfront bistro right beside the lifesaving facility. All revenue generated from the social venue funds essential lifesaving equipment and training https://thesurfclubbribieisland.com.au/bistro/

New Bribie bridge by 2032. The existing bridge would carry two lanes of westbound traffic and the new bridge would be designed to enable future widening to four lanes.

The new bridge would be designed to enable future widening to four lanes, when the existing bridge is no longer cost-effective to maintain, which could be around 2038.

SS Koopa docked at Bongaree Jetty, 1911-1930. The SS Koopa, affectionately known as the "Queen of Moreton Bay," was the primary mode of transport to Bribie Island for over 40 years before the bridge was built. Built in Leith, Scotland, the vessel arrived in Brisbane on Christmas Eve, 1911. Licensed to carry 1,153 passengers, making it one of the largest excursion ships in Brisbane at the time.

It's a riddle. What is Australia's only sub-tropical island connected to the mainland by a bridge?

The names Bongaree and Bribie both carry significant historical weight, though they originate from very different sources: one commemorates an Aboriginal explorer who played a vital role in early Australian maritime history, while the other is rooted in local convict folklore

Bongaree is named after Bungaree (often spelled Bongaree), a Garigal man from Broken Bay who was a pioneer and diplomat

In 1799, Bongaree accompanied explorer Matthew Flinders on the sloop Norfolk into Moreton Bay. He was the first person to step ashore on Bribie Island, acting as an interpreter and go-between with the local Joondoburri people.

When the township was surveyed in 1912, the name Bongaree was officially chosen. An alternative suggestion, "Banya," was rejected because it was too similar to other Queensland place names, though it remains the name of one of the town's grandest streets.
