Today is International Day of Sign Languages.

Sign languages are full, rich languages in their own right, not just a translation of spoken words. Today is about recognising Deaf communities, promoting the rights of Deaf people, and celebrating the role sign language plays in connection, culture, and inclusion.

For many people we support, communication looks different, and that's something to be understood and embraced, not overcome. Everyone deserves to be heard in the way that works best for them.

Here's to a more inclusive, accessible world for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

SDA is actually built around five different design categories, not one:

Improved Liveability, for people with sensory, intellectual, or cognitive disability who benefit from better internal light, air flow, and easier navigation around the home.

Fully Accessible, designed with wheelchair accessible features throughout, including step-free access and wider doorways.

Robust, built with strong, durable materials for people who may require support around behaviours that could impact the physical structure of their home.

High Physical Support, purpose built for people with significant physical support needs, often including ceiling hoists, wider corridors, and other assistive technology.

There are also combinations of these categories, like High Physical Support paired with Fully Accessible features, depending on what someone actually needs.

So the real question is not whether SDA fits you, it's which category does. There's likely a home already built with your needs in mind.

Sharing a home should not mean sharing your entire life with someone else.

Before choosing a shared SDA home, it is worth asking the real questions. Does your bedroom have its own private ensuite? Are shared spaces actually shared fairly, or does one person tend to take over? Can support workers see or hear into your private space? How are visitors and guests managed in common areas? And just as importantly, what happens if privacy becomes a genuine issue with a housemate down the track?

Good design and good processes should protect your privacy, not leave it up to chance.

Sharing a home is sharing a home, but SDA co-tenancy works a little differently to a standard rental share house.

With regular roommates, you usually find each other, sort out routines on your own, and handle any conflict as it comes up. Compatibility is mostly left to chance.

SDA co-tenancy takes a more considered approach. Matching looks at routines and support needs, homes are designed with private space alongside shared space, and support is built into daily life rather than something you have to organise yourself.

Same idea of sharing a home, but with a very different level of thought behind it.

A reminder for our SDA tenants and families: changes to social and community participation funding start phasing in from 1 October, just a few weeks away.

This will roll out gradually as plans are reassessed or renewed, not all at once, and we'll be in touch directly if it affects you.

Eligibility isn't changing until 1 January 2028. People with permanent, significant disability will continue to access the NDIS.

A vacancy listing might only take a minute to scroll past, but a lot happens before it ever goes live.

Every home is checked against its design category to confirm it genuinely meets the accessibility standards it claims to, not just on paper. Compliance and safety checks are completed, covering everything from fire safety to structural requirements. Only once all of that is signed off does a home get styled and photographed, so what you see in the listing reflects what you can actually expect to walk into.

This High Physical Support SDA home in Coopers Plains is designed with accessibility at its core.

Wide doorways and wheelchair-accessible spaces let you move through the home freely. Non-slip flooring adds safety throughout. Sound-insulated bedrooms give you a genuinely quiet space to recharge. Natural light and ventilation keep the home bright and fresh.
