FLASHBACK 🪩 When the Gazebo Hotel opened in the heart of Kings Cross in 1969, it was described as “one of the most spirited additions to the Sydney skyline for some time.”
A prominent example of International Style, the design was based on a 12-sided gazebo, harnessing the strength of a concrete and steel skeleton to deliver spacious interiors with extensive glazing.
Legendary photographer Max Dupain was commissioned to capture the hotel in all its swinging ‘60s glory, including a top-floor pool with enclosed observation deck and a groovy-as-hell purple bar.
The 200-room hotel welcomed its last guests in the late 1990s. By 2005, its conversion to apartments was complete. These days, Elizabeth Bay and Potts Point are home to more cold-drip cafes and boutique w**e bars than seedy clubs, as young professionals, families and downsizers all vie to call the vibrant inner-city neighbourhood home. The Gazebo still stands as a local landmark and reminder of a bygone era.
