Survey Plan PD59 reveals more than just boundaries! This slice of history includes a mysterious burn- perhaps from a forgotten cigarette?

Marked with a reference to "Bush Fires, 1930-40," it's a peek into the past's quirks.

This circumferentor is on display Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying. It is a large compass with sighting veins to determine the magnetic bearing (direction) of a survey line.

Two fixed sights are provided with slits and windows for sighting in either direction. The divided circle (0-360) moves in alignment with the two vertical sighting veins while the pointer (magnetic needle) remains stationery.

The compass is mounted on a tripod and two fixed bubbles are used to level the instrument. Magnetic bearings are read off the compass face. Our circumferentor is over 170 years old.

Our artefact for November is a Gunter’s chain, invented in 1620 by English mathematician Edmund Gunter.

It is a device used to measure distances in land surveying composed of 100 metal β€œlinks” fastened together by rings. The length of one chain, or 100 links, equals 22 yards, or a cricket pitch.

The brass β€œtellers” – placed every 10 links – show the distance from the end of the chain, by the number of β€œpoints” on the teller. For example, the image in the comments shows a teller with four points, which equals 40 links.
