It's bunya nut time!

It’s the most iconic time of the year at the Bunya Mountains – bunya nut time! These giant edible pinecones, which can sometimes weigh up to 10kg, are ripening and falling across the Bunya Mountains, with loud crashing sounds often being heard under the trees. This ancient food source has been long beloved by the local indigenous people, and was even once food for dinosaurs many eons ago! The birds and animals are enjoying the feast, but we’ve managed to find plenty to use in the café as well to make our delicious bunya burgers and other scrumptious delicacies! It’s a great time of year to visit – just make sure you don’t stand or park under the bunya pines, as the nuts can drop without warning!

Calling budding photographers – launching our dark skies photography competition

It’s competition time again! If you enjoy spending time at the Bunya Mountains and photographing the amazing scenery and wildlife all around, then we want your best photos! The Bunya Mountains is renowned for being a dark skies area, and winter is the ideal time for stargazing, so this month we’re looking for the best dark sky photograph taken at the Bunya Mountains. The winning photographer will receive a $100 voucher to Poppies on the Hill Café and a $100 voucher to QBD Bookshop.

A few rules:
• This competition is seeking the best dark skies photograph taken at the Bunya Mountains (and if it contains recognisable Bunya Mountains elements, so much the better).
• There is no cost to enter, but participants by entering agree to allow the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre the right to use images for marketing purposes (with appropriate acknowledgement).
• All photographs must be suitable for displaying in a public environment.
• Entries are to be submitted in the comments section of this post.
• Entries close Thursday 31st August 2023, and the winner will be notified by Thursday 7th September 2023.
• The competition is open to professional photographers, amateurs and enthusiasts. There is no age limit.
• Images must be submitted as a high-quality jpeg.
• Participants may enter as many times as they like.
• Each entry must be the original work of the person submitting the entry.

We look forward to seeing your creative dark sky photos over the next few weeks – have fun!

Ever spotted an Antechinus at the Bunya Mountains?

You may never have even heard of an antechinus – let alone spotted one, but the Bunya Mountains is home to one antechinus variety, the yellow-footed antechinus. This marsupial carnivore looks somewhat like a mouse or shrew, and can be found foraging for food on the ground amongst leaf litter and fallen logs, and in trees. Its’ white eye ring and black tail tip are distinguishing features, along with its namesake yellow-brown feet. The yellow-footed antechinus is more active during the day than other similar species, so keep any eye out for these little guys next time you’re at the Bunya Mountains. They’re a wonderful sight to see, or you may even manage to get a photo - like this great capture from David Simons.
