In this episode, we sit down with Don Page, who represented Ballina for the National Party for 27 years, to explore a family legacy of public service running back generations. Don grew up on a 25,000-acre cattle station in the Upper Clarence, one of seven children, before studying economics and eventually finding his way into politics. His grandfather was Sir Earle Page - a pioneering surgeon who topped his medical degree at just 21, became one of Australia’s first invasive surgeons, served on the Somme in WWI, and later served as a caretaker Prime Minister for a few weeks in 1939 after also serving 14 years as Deputy Prime Minister and 18 years as leader of the Country Party.

We dig into what shaped Don’s own 27 years in politics, a belief that honesty always beats spin, and a willingness to break with his own party when it mattered, including publicly opposing the Iraq War in 2003 despite pressure from federal leadership. Don also reflects on Byron’s height-limit planning laws, which he helped protect, and why he believes the absence of high-rise is exactly what gives the region its village feel. He finishes with his favourite local spot, the Byron lighthouse, which he says still feels different, and special, every single time he visits.

In this episode, we sit down with Andy Dubois, an online ultramarathon running coach, to explore how a surveying career and a mid-life crisis of sorts led him to a life built entirely around endurance sport. Andy shares his path from a young surveyor in Adelaide who was “bored out of his brain” at 22, to a personal trainer in London, to eventually building an online coaching business almost by accident — after a client emailed asking if he coached ultramarathons, and he said yes before he’d technically done it.
