An icon of a time gone by. Blockbuster was once one of the largest video rental chains in Australia.

The first Australian Blockbuster store was opened in 1991 in Melbourne. It was an off shoot of the massively successful US chain.

Video and later DVD rentals were big business in the 90s and 2000s, and Blockbuster rapidly expanded across Australia.

At one point in the 2000s, Blockbuster had around 370 video stores across the country.

In 2007 the Australian stores were sold off to Video Ezy. Many stores were then rebranded or closed.

The last Blockbuster in Australia closed in 2019, in Morley WA.
