The Morphettville Racecourse Wetland was constructed by the Patawalonga Catchment Water Management Board in conjunction with the South Australian Jockey Club in 2001 and 2002.

The wetland is in the middle of the Morphettville Racecourse (on the corner of Anzac Highway and Morphett Road) and covers an area of 3.5 hectares. The wetland cost $2.4 million to construct, and is home to 100,000 plants, with the excavated soil used to raise the level of the racecourse track.

Stormwater flows into the wetland from two drains in Bray Street, south of the racecourse. This water enters a sediment pond where any floating litter is collected in a net, while large materials settle out. The water is then piped into the wetland, where it flows through a series of shallow and deep marshes.

An aquifer storage and recovery system (ASR) has also been constructed.

The water flowing out of the wetland has very low salinity and is therefore ideal for irrigation. Water is captured during winter months and pumped into a tertiary limestone aquifer underneath the racecourse. During summer months, the water in the aquifer is recovered and used for irrigation. Each year up to 600 megalitres of water is recharged into the aquifer, which exceeds the amount of water required to irrigate the racecourse.

The Morphettville Racecourse Wetland is just 20 minutes by foot, or two minutes by car from your new METRO425 apartment.
