Light House ArchiScience

Light House ArchiScience Delightful, healthy, cost-effective homes — new & existing. Until 2025 we did architecture + science.

Now we only provide independent, scienced-based services and advice… the ArchiScience is the secret sauce that made our design projects so successful. The aim of the interdisciplinary team at Light House ArchiScience is to simplify the sustainable design process, to create comfortable, clever, energy-efficient homes. We specialise in energy-efficient and space-efficient homes designed to suit Canb

erra’s climate. By combining excellent design with scientific testing, we create homes that feel spacious and comfortable, and function beautifully, on a smaller than average floor area. Many of our homes achieve an energy efficiency rating of 8+ stars. Compared to a 6 star home the same size (6 stars being the current minimum standard), these houses require half as much energy per year to heat and cool them to comfortable temperatures. Our vision is to make beautiful, energy efficient housing mainstream. We hope to be a beacon for positive change in the residential construction industry. We are committed to helping people with a ‘mainstream’ budget achieve their dream of an excellent, comfortable and affordable home. Previously known as Jigsaw Housing the innovative, integrated design-science-build business restructured and rebranded in November 2015. The change has been exciting and positive; enabling a wider audience to access our unique integrated services and our collaborative network to expand. I’ll take raising the number who voted false from 26% to 33% as a win given the man-el (male dominated panel) was dominated by PH advocates from Sydney and I’d just hopped of a bus from Canberra in the rain. I hopped on that bus to ensure there was at least one alternative voice with significant experience with loads of homes and the people who live in them. Seems real world results down the road in Canberra count for very little in the eye of PH advocates. It was hard to get a word in which is okay cos I’m much more interested in discussions like that raised by Tone Wheeler these days. Retrofit for the win (and not to PH levels).

Our designs (hundreds of them) perform incredibly well in the harsh Canberra climate (winter minimums of -8 to summer maximums of 44). Increasing specs to achieve PH accreditation would cost at the very least 10% more for buggerall return (most of the builders we work with, who have built both PH and LH projects think more like 15%). You can still have a HRV system in a Light House if you want one — I did! I’ve written articles for Renew and Sanctuary about our approach, condensation management, airtightness and HRV that are freely available. The many builders we collaborate with can achieve airtightness levels of 2 ACH@50Pa even in renovations. That’s without an internal air barrier membrane and with just a 90mm stud frame. Back to basics: 1. Design for site and climate 2. Build it well 3. Test it works.

Although PH people dismiss our approach because it lacks independent third party verification by someone from the PH club, I can assure you we’re testing the product we design, after it’s built by a builder (independent of us) on behalf of our clients who *expect* their homes to work… and our clients stay in touch with us.

We’ve also tested quite a few Passivhaus projects. I was using a blower door and ProClima products well before PH came to Aus.

You don’t have to start a private institute and sell training and accreditation to be credible and create positive change 👩🏻‍🔬

Keep in mind that I’m not selling products, processes or even architectural services these days. What was that about independence? 😊

There are many great things that came out of the Passive House debate on Tuesday night, now doing the heated rounds on social media. But among them was the dramatic lift in knowledge about this typology that has raised the temperature of debate around the ideal building systems in this country.

Jenny Edwards of Light House ArchiScience is all about “bang for buck”. Passive House costs way too much for most people, she says, and you can get great results with the building science she brings to the industry.

Come along and celebrate the start of Sustainable House Day 2026 in an online event on Friday. It will be very serious 🧐

Light House’s very own Jenergy looks way more serious in this mug shot than usual. Come along to see her favourite t-shirt and what else she comes armed with. Jen is not afraid of a prop to help get the message across. She DIGs this stuff… hard.

Nothing excites us more than building community and sharing stuff rather than buying stuff we don’t need.

Glen didn’t need a rivet gun he needed to join two pieces of stuff together with rivets. Community Toolbox Canberra to the rescue with their brilliant BUS, busting at the seams with useful gear.

This UTTER legend is Glen 🥳

Glen borrowed a rivet gun from the Tool Bus last Wednesday evening, making him our first EVER Belco Tool Bus customer!! Glen, if we had a prize, we'd give it to you, but since we don't, we'll just give you fame. Maybe infamy 🤩

That's right, the Tool Bus now has a Belconnen stop - every Wednesday evening, between 6:30pm and 7:30pm. Find event listings right here on Facebook with all the details about when to reserve and where to find us, or read more online: https://www.communitytoolboxcbr.org/toolbus

An oldie but a goodie.

Jenny Edwards doesn't mince words on the topic of using gas in the home.

"Get off it, is my view," she tells ABC RN's Life Matters.

For a decade Ms Edwards, director and science team leader at Light House Architecture and Science, has been helping households in Canberra – most of which have gas heating, hot water and cooking – to do just that.

The effects of double-glazed windows can be mimicked with bubble wrap. Induction cooktops come with a curve for woks. Here are more tips to get energy efficient at home.

Did you catch Jenny's interview on ABC Radio National?
Listen to her chat about sustainable housing & creating positive change.
A healthy home is a human right, not just for the privileged!
Hear more from 2022 and even as far back as 2012!

On the 9th of April Jenny was interviewed for the ABC Radio National segment: Changing Australia.

I believe everyone in Aus should and could live in a safe and healthy home. Alarmingly, many people struggle to survive with no home at all.

I am joining an incredible group of women — the Women Building Change team — to participate in the on June 18 because we are determined to be part of positive change in housing… for *all* Australians.

Last year this newly formed team slept outside on a night that hit -8, yes MINUS 8°C, and raised $280K! I want to help them raise more than $300K this year.

We have room for more women on the team so if you’d like to join us to support Vinnie’s incredibly important work with the people who find themselves without a home then please reach out.

I’m not sure how my hip replacements will go on the cardboard and concrete but one night of discomfort is nothing when you know you have a home to shelter in the following night.

Housing is a right, it should not be a privilege. We need to fix this situation. Vinnie’s does an amazing job. We know times feel tough for everyone right now. That means there will be more people sleeping rough this winter and even more help will be needed. Let’s help Vinnie’s help the people who need it most.

I’m participating in the CEO Sleepout on the 18th of June this year as a member of an awesome team: Women Building Change.

Last year the team raised a phenomenal $280k. I’m aiming for $4k for starters.

At Light House we believe everyone should, and could, live in a healthy home. Imagine having no home at all. Sadly that is the case for increasing numbers of people in our community.

I’d love your help, to help Vinnies, to help those people in our region who need it most.

I know it’s tough for lots of people right now and everyone is coping with things the outside world can’t see. Imagine doing that while couch surfing, sleeping in your car, in a tent, or on the streets.

It doesn’t happen often but one of the 250+ Light House integrated architecture and science projects in Canberra is on the market. Light-filled, light-footed, super-sustainable, all-electric, healthy and comfortable homes like this are rare.

This 7.9 ⭐️ one in Campbell with its small footprint on a large block is a garden, and leafy outlook, lovers paradise.

Check out the butterfly and blue-banded bee I happened to snap in the backyard zinnia patch 🌸🦋🐝

Please note: the sale has nothing to do with us apart from the fact that we are proud of our integrated architecture and science. For more info contact Blackshaw regarding 4 Godfrey St or search your favourite real estate website 😊

Come and see what good design feels like and ask the agents how much the clients have paid for energy since moving in… or send me your guesses. They run an electric car as well. ☀️⚡️🤔💛

BTW we no longer provide architecture services. After being Canberra’s largest and most awarded residential architecture practice for a decade I have downsized the business and returned to our science roots — in the name of energy efficiency, sustainability and health. Our small but mighty team provide science services (energy efficiency optimisation and retrofit advice) to homeowners, designers and builders. Still having impact… just in a different format 👩🏻‍🔬👨🏼‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬💪
