the helpful bloke Neil provides reliable, friendly property maintenance snd tech setup and support. Hi, I’m Neil Verney, “the helpful bloke”.

I’m a Canberra-based handyman and technology specialist with a practical, solution-focused approach and a genuine enjoyment for getting things done properly. Originally from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, I’ve lived and worked across Africa, Europe, the UK, and Australia since immigrating in 1996. These experiences have shaped a calm, adaptable, and down-to-earth way of working with people and solving proble

ms. My background spans surveying, logistics, hospitality, tour guiding, and senior roles in the IT industry across retail, investment banking, and government. I’ve worked hands-on in building and assembly, customer support, technical analysis, and IT management, with responsibility for systems, devices, networks, and security. After project-managing the partial rebuild of my own home and supporting a small business with website development, I realised I’d built a strong mix of practical skills, technical knowledge, and problem-solving experience. That led to the creation of The Helpful Bloke. My aim is simple: to provide honest, reliable, and fairly priced property maintenance and technology support to the Canberra community. From everyday repairs and general maintenance to tech setup and troubleshooting, I’m here to help when you need a capable, trustworthy extra set of hands.

💻 HOME IT & TECH TIPS

1. Speed up slow Wi-Fi (fast)
• Reboot modem + router monthly
• Place router high and central
• Avoid closets, basements, and metal cabinets

2. Improve Wi-Fi without buying new gear
Change your router channel (especially in apartments) to avoid neighbor interference.

3. Label your cables
Use masking tape + marker. You will be VERY grateful you did.

4. Protect against power surges
Use a surge protector (not just a power strip) for TVs, PCs, and networking gear.

5. Back up automatically
Set up cloud backups or an external drive—don’t wait until something fails.

6. Fix “device not connecting” issues
Forget the network → reconnect → reboot device. This solves most home network issues.

7. Smart home basics
Keep smart devices on a separate Wi-Fi network if possible (guest network = safer).

🛠️ HANDYMAN TIPS (Home)

1. Find studs without a stud finder

Use a strong magnet to locate drywall screws—those are usually anchored into studs.

2. Stop squeaky doors fast

Rub a bar of soap, candle wax, or a drop of cooking oil on the hinge pin.

3. Fix loose screws in wood

Stick a few toothpicks or a matchstick into the hole, snap them off, then reinsert the screw.

4. Label breakers properly

Plug in a lamp or radio and flip breakers one by one—it’s faster and more accurate than guessing.

5. Prevent stripped screws

Press hard, go slow, and make sure the screwdriver tip fully fits. For stubborn screws, tap the screwdriver with a hammer first.

6. Caulk like a pro

Cut the caulk tip at a 45° angle, use painter’s tape on both sides, and smooth with a wet finger.

7. Silence a running toilet

Usually it’s just a worn flapper—cheap, easy, and no plumber needed.
