Marcus is a third year student from Otago Uni, spending his summer with us as a surveying intern in Rocky, working with Wade Elliot. His placement has covered wind farms, solar farms and roading upgrades, real exposure to the range of work our teams take on.

Beyond the fieldwork, Marcus enjoyed being in sunny Rocky, always social and part of the team.

We’ve got our teams out in Central Queensland, supporting a client on works tied to a new coal mine under construction.

Currently building a new intersection on the nearby highway into the mine site. Work has included a full control traverse and level run through the site, clearing works, locating services, drainage installation and now placing gravel for the new subbase layer, surveyed to plus or minus 10mm. All work is carried out to full TMR (Main Roads) specifications, with reports provided to the client to keep the job progressing on schedule.

The second scope is a bulk earthworks job at the mine site itself. Here the team has been placing ground control marks ahead of a LiDAR drone flight, providing the client with accurate bulk quantities for their end of month reporting.

14km completed in 2 days. Our new Trimble Dini's are paying off already, cutting down the time it takes to get quality levelling data on a job of this scale.

Credit to Ewan Martin, Karen Norton & Bohdi for the effort out in Gladstone, solid work on a stretch of highway that isn't always easy going.

Luke Lorback and our Melbourne team were recently on site delivering structural steel setout for a large warehouse development, working across level one and the roof to set out cleats, brackets, bolts and shelf angles.

When steel goes up, it goes up fast. Having accurate setout from the start means every connection lands where it's supposed to, the structure comes together cleanly and the build keeps moving without costly corrections or rework holding up the programme.

Recently the Airlie Beach crew snuck out for a well earned lunch at the local pub, a small thank you for the work going into what's been a big few months in the Whitsundays.

Between the survey work keeping pace with the region's growth and the team consistently going above and beyond for our clients, it's fair to say they've earned it. Not everyone could get away on the day, but we've already got the other crew sorted for a well deserved lunch coming up. No one misses out.

It's a busy time up there and our crews are absolutely delivering.

Dave Wilson, Wade Elliott, Rod Baxter and Renee Elliott jumped the ditch to University of Otago for another year of chatting to the students, twisting some Kiwi arms into summer internships (or moving for a full time gig) with Vision Surveys back in Australia.

This year they copped a loss in the boat race at the pub afterwards (trying to blame jet lag) but came home with 20+ resumes, so we'll call it a win overall. Great trip, already looking forward to the next one!

Recently, Michael, Oliver and Charlie, three of our surveyors from the Airlie Beach office, traded the total station for a set of clubs at the 5th Annual Whitsunday Lions Charity Golf Day at Whitsunday Green in Cannon Valley.

This year's theme had teams dressing up and ours went with elderly golfers, canes, walking frames and all. Not sure it did much for their swing, but it certainly won points for commitment.

We were stoked to sponsor the 4th hole and back an event raising funds for Proserpine Hospital and other local causes. The Lion's Club has been running this one for five years and it's grown into a fixture on the local calendar for good reason.

The Whitsundays is a region we're proud to work in every day and supporting the community that comes with it is something we don't take lightly. Happy to be back for the next one, walkers and all.

Reece Bonham graduated from Otago University in New Zealand in 2012 and joined Vision Surveys in 2021 as Survey Manager for Central Queensland. Four years in and he is showing no signs of slowing down.

The work across Central Queensland is as varied and challenging as it gets and Reece has thrown himself into all of it. Getting out on site with the crew, passing on hard won knowledge and making sure the team gets exposure to projects that don't just keep you busy but make you a better surveyor. Central Queensland has no shortage of those right now.

He is the kind of manager who gets as much out of watching the team grow as he does from the work itself. That energy is what makes the Rocky crew what it is.

A pretty special day for our Mackay and Whitsundays teams recently.

Chris, our General Manager, joined one of our long term construction clients on site at Riverbend Estate in Mirani for a Queensland Government funding announcement alongside Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie and Member for Mirani Glen Kelly.

The project was awarded $3.4 million through the Residential Activation Fund for key infrastructure including major external roadworks and intersections, a new stormwater basin and sewer network. That infrastructure is what unlocks the lots and gets homes built for the region.

Vision Surveys has been supporting Riverbend Estate across titling, contour and detail surveys and with stage one nearing completion, there's plenty more work ahead.

Good things are happening in the Pioneer Valley and we're glad to be part of it.

Three of our team are hopping across the ditch to Dunedin next week to meet the next generation of surveyors.

Dave Wilson, Wade Elliott and Rod Baxter are heading to University of Otago to chat with surveying students about life at Vision Surveys - our grad program, locations you could work in and projects you get to work on early to build your experience.
