It didn’t happen by accident – years of wetlands, engineering and monitoring are behind it, and this is just the start.

Get ready to run Western Sydney Lakes – on Saturday 21 November, the inaugural Western Sydney Lakes Marathon will bring runners to the Lakes for a morning of running and incredible views.

It’s a chance to experience the site in a whole new way, with the 42.2km and 21.1km courses taking runners through the lakeside landscape and along sections of Western Sydney Lakes that have never before been open to the public.

With the scenic Blue Mountains as your backdrop, you’ll discover a different side of Western Sydney and get an inside look as we build on the site's transformation into one of the region’s great recreational destinations.

And there’s a distance for everyone, with a marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km to choose from.

Welcome to our wetlands precinct – the driving force behind the ongoing rehabilitation of Western Sydney Lakes.

What was once a tailings site from the former quarry has been transformed into a world-class wetlands environment.

Today, it plays a vital role in filtering water across the entire lakes system, supporting biodiversity and improving water quality.

Western Sydney Lakes is more than a destination.

Today, the site supports emergency services training and is home to major projects including Nepean Aerospace Park and Nepean Business Park , alongside established assets such as the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

These are just some of the opportunities already taking shape across the site, with more to come.

Western Sydney Lakes is helping shape a future where industry, recreation, employment and community can thrive together.

During the ongoing rehabilitation of Western Sydney Lakes, the site has become home to a variety of native Australian flora and fauna.

Across the site, the revitalised waterways, wetlands and open space have created an environment where local and native species can flourish.

More than 220,000 native trees have been planted throughout the site, creating an environment where more than 80 bird species have been recorded, including Black Swans, White-bellied Sea-Eagles, Peregrine Falcons and migratory species such as Latham’s Snipe.

As Western Sydney Lakes continues to evolve, future recreational, tourism and urban amenities will sit alongside these natural environments, creating a destination where people, places and nature can thrive.
