This is one of my favourite things about the kids growing up on the farm. 🤎

Sweet Pea was rejected by her mum when she was a little calf, so we brought her home and bottle raised her. She was one of those little calves that quickly became part of the family.

Now she’s 18 months old, a big girl and happily living out with the herd. But she still comes over for a pat, a scratch and a cuddle when she sees us… and today Harry decided that apparently she still makes a pretty good horse. 😂🐮

Harry has known her since she was tiny, so it’s pretty special seeing the two of them together now.

I love that this is what growing up on a farm looks like for our kids — knowing the animals, helping care for them, watching them grow and making memories along the way.

And Sweet Pea? She may be all grown up, but she still knows where home is. 🤎🐮

A big job ticked off today 🐂❤️

We headed out to the far paddocks to bring in our 18-month-olds — our very first calves born to the Elimatta herd. There’s something pretty special about seeing them growing into these beautiful young cattle after watching them arrive as calves.

Now it’s over to the stock agent to come out, have a look and help us decide the best option moving forward.

Fingers crossed, these boys will be heading off to market this spring 🤞🏼🐂

🌱 Spring clean, Elimatta style! 🐄

The old shearing shed is getting ready for another job — calf rearing! This will be the third lot of poddy calves we’ve raised in here, but there’s still plenty to do to make the shed a little more practical and a lot easier to manage.

Today’s job was getting stuck into the less glamorous stuff… all the old bedding and poo cleared out, a good wash down, and a little help from our smallest farmer, Harry. 🧹🐄

It’s not quite finished yet, but it’s a good start. There’s always something to improve when you’re figuring things out as you go — and after two lots of calves, we definitely know a few things we’d like to do differently this time around!

Now to get it finished and ready for the next little arrivals. 🤎

The first day of spring certainly didn’t disappoint 🌼☀️

We decided to spend the day fencing — not our favourite job, but definitely a never-ending one on the farm! 🚜

The bull paddock fences are now all up to scratch, the sun is shining, and we swear we can almost hear the grass growing! 🌱🐂

Here’s to longer days, warmer weather and everything coming back to life at Elimatta Farm 💛🌿

Cows will be cows… 🤦‍♀️😂

Despite having a perfectly good dam to drink from, this clever girl decided the fresh running water in the drain was the better option… even if it meant sinking elbow-deep into the mud first.

We don’t always understand their logic, but they certainly keep life interesting! 🐂💦

The girls and their calves are off to the bush paddocks… and I think they’re pretty happy about it. 🌿🐂

After a big few months, our breeding herd of 22 cows has earned a well-deserved break.

This calving season we welcomed 12 calves—a 54.5% calving rate. While that’s lower than we’d usually hope for, our breeding window was reduced to just three weeks after our bull required a precautionary penicillin injection the previous year, limiting the time he could safely be joined with the cows.

There were still plenty of positives to celebrate:
🤎 No calves needed pulling during calving.
🤎 We sadly lost one calf due to prematurity.
🤎 We welcomed another four beautiful heifer calves to the herd.

With this year’s joining now complete after another eight weeks with the bull, we’re looking forward to seeing what next calving season brings. All but two cows have successfully calved at least once over the past two seasons, and with a full joining period this time around, we’re hopeful they’ll all fall pregnant. If not, we’ll have some decisions to make about which cows have a future here at Elimatta. That’s all part of breeding a productive, efficient herd.

Watching this mob move is always something special. The older cows know exactly where they’re going, and it’s amazing to see them quietly teaching the calves how to travel as a herd. No fuss, no stress—just generations of instinct on display.

Now they’ll spend the coming months doing what cattle do best: grazing through lush bush paddocks, drinking from the dam, raising their calves, and enjoying the good life until weaning time rolls around.

These quieter moments are what make all the hard work worthwhile. 🌾❤️

Job done! 🐂

After 8 weeks with the herd, Torquay has headed home today.

Now comes the hardest part… waiting and hoping for a paddock full of healthy Elimatta Red Angus calves in autumn. 🤞🌱
