School holidays have arrived… our thoughts are with parents everywhere. 😂

It’s another action-packed Clermont weekend, read on to find out more..

🌱 SATURDAY MORNING – PAT’S PLANTS
Pat will be set up outside the Newsagency from 7am Saturday, so get in early and grab yourself a healthy looking plant to kill. Just me? Ok!

🩲🍺 JUGS N JOCKS – SATURDAY
Yes. It’s on.
Yes. That is what it’s called.
No we don’t know what they get up to…
It’s a men’s only event on Saturday night from 6pm at the RSL! If you haven’t got your ticket yet, then pop into the Pharmacy and get it today…it will sell out!

🌸 GARDEN CLUB – SUNDAY, 10AM
This month’s gathering is at Karen Dixon’s place, 456 Alpha Road.
Bring a chair and a plate of food to share and enjoy a wander around the garden.

🏇 CLERMONT RACE CLUB AGM – SUNDAY
For those who like their Sunday activities with a little more governance, the Race Club AGM is on. All members are requested to attend to ensure a quorum. At the race club at 11am!

🏓 PICKLEBALL – SUNDAY
Get down to the courts for the usual Sunday morning hit from 8.30am.

🎳 SUNDAY BOWLS
Finish the weekend with an afternoon on the green. Sensible shoes recommended. Ability optional. Register from 1pm for a 1.30pm start! They’ve been getting some great numbers, the music has been pumping, and everyone is having a great time! If you haven’t experienced it yet, get down there and have a go!

💧 AND A REMINDER – WATER RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE
Yes, they’re frustrating. Yes, we’d all love to turn the sprinklers on and give the lawn a decent drink.
But it’s worth remembering that the pump at the Water Treatment Plant has been fixed. Now, what we really need is rain.
Restrictions aren’t there just to make life difficult, they’re there to protect the water supply we have left.
While we might grumble about not being able to water the lawn when we want to, we’d be doing a whole lot more grumbling if we turned on the tap and nothing came out.
So for now, conserve where you can, follow the restrictions and perhaps join the rest of Clermont in doing the most traditional drought-breaking activity known to mankind: staring at the sky and saying, “Those clouds look promising…” 🌧️😂

Check the notice for when you can water your lawns! We can do this Clermont!

🏫 AND YES… IT’S SCHOOL HOLIDAYS!

The children are free!
The teachers are free!

Parents, my number one tip for surviving the school holidays is to lower your expectations…

At the end of the day, even if you have had to interrupt an argument about who gets to breathe first, as long as the kids are relatively uninjured and the house hasn’t burnt down, you are winning!

Whatever you’re doing this weekend, get out, support something local, conserve water and enjoy Clermont. The pool is open, the skatepark is shaded, the weather is beautiful…happy holidays!

THANKFUL THURSDAY

Last week, the world reflected on the 25th anniversary of September 11, and it was a reminder that life can change in an instant and that peace is something never to be taken for granted.

Here in our little corner of Australia, we are incredibly fortunate.

We wake up in a warm bed. We have food in our bellies. (Mostly) clean water comes out of the tap. Our children head off to school, we go to work, catch up with friends, complain about that weather, discuss that woeful referee decision in the Grand Final and plan what we're doing on the weekend.

They're such ordinary things that we barely give them a second thought.

Yet in comparison to other places around the world, they are extraordinary privileges.

Australia isn't perfect, and none of our lives are without challenges, but today is a gentle reminder to be grateful for the safety of our homes, the freedom of our everyday lives and the community we get to share them with.

So this Thankful Thursday, we are taking a moment to appreciate the simple things that we get to experience every single day. 💚

If you think Clermont enjoys a cold b**r today, spare a thought for our early residents…

When gold brought miners flooding into the district, one of the first things they apparently needed was somewhere to wet the whistle.

In fact, the Diggers’ Retreat opened in 1862 – before Clermont had even been formally surveyed as a town!

By 1865, the fledgling town already had three hotels and several boarding houses.

But we were only getting warmed up.

By 1891, Clermont had EIGHT hotels – quite an achievement for a little bush town!

And by 1915, six hotels lined Drummond Street alone.

Apparently gold mining was VERY thirsty work. 🍻😂

These early pubs were much more than watering holes. They provided accommodation and meals, and became meeting places, social hubs and venues for everything from sporting gatherings to community business.

Then there was the Grand Hotel – a pub that has had more lives than a cat.

The Grand was established in the 1890s and was described in an 1898 newspaper report as “the best building in the town.”

Unfortunately, being the best building in town didn't provide much protection from fire.

🔥 In June 1899, the Grand burnt to the ground.

It was rebuilt – which turned out to be a very good decision, because there was plenty more excitement ahead.

When the catastrophic 1916 flood tore through Clermont, only three of the six hotels lining Drummond Street were left standing – including the Grand.

Rather than leave the surviving pubs in the old flood-prone town, Clermont did something fairly extraordinary.

WE MOVED THEM.

In 1917, the Grand was lifted off its blocks, placed on wooden rollers and hauled roughly three-quarters of a mile to its new home in Capella Street using a steam traction engine.

The trip took about four weeks.

But here is the truly wacky part…

THE PUB KEPT TRADING WHILE IT WAS BEING MOVED! 🍺😳

Boarders continued eating their meals in the dining room and sleeping in their rooms each night. Contemporary reports said they simply became accustomed to looking for their “moving home” in a different location each night.

Imagine having a few too many b**rs and discovering someone had actually moved the pub. I reckon there might have been a few who gave up the grog during this time...😂

The Commercial Hotel was another survivor – but it presented a slightly bigger engineering problem.

It was so large and built in an L-shape that they SAWED THE HOTEL IN HALF, moved it in two sections and put it back together on higher ground.

And yes… service continued there too. Guests reportedly ate in the dining room and slept in their rooms while their hotel was making its way across Clermont. Imagine the WH&S paperwork that would need to be done to accomplish that now...😳

But the Grand's adventures weren't finished.

🔥 Having already burnt down once in 1899, the historic two-storey Grand burnt down AGAIN in the early 1980s.

The single-storey Grand we know today replaced that historic building.

So, in very simplified terms, the Grand Hotel's life story goes something like this:

Built → burnt down → rebuilt → survived Clermont's biggest flood → moved across town → kept serving b**r while moving → burnt down AGAIN → rebuilt again.

You really have to admire the determination to keep the pub open. 😂🍺

And Clermont wasn't the only thirsty settlement around here. Nearby Copperfield, which at its peak had more than 2,000 people, boasted SIX hotels of its own!

So while Clermont and Copperfield may have been built on gold, copper, cattle and sheep…

We're beginning to suspect b**r may have played a fairly important supporting role. 🍻😂

Celebrating 100 years of golf in Clermont, the club has a huge weekend planned, with former and current players descending on town in droves. Expect plenty of old faces, old stories, questionable recollections of great shots and at least a few people who haven’t changed a bit…

But golf isn’t the only thing happening!

🏏 Junior Bulls Sign-On from 4pm at the Sportsground, with a sausage and drink provided. Get the young Bulls signed up and ready to bat, bowl and have a blast!

💚 THANKFUL THURSDAY 💚

Our sellers of this property were among the original investors in this development backing the project right from the beginning and becoming part of its story from the ground up.

So there’s something pretty special about now seeing that chapter come to a close, and the property passed on to its new owners.

And we couldn’t be happier about who is taking over the keys. 🔑

Our buyers are relocating to Clermont to be closer to family which, if you ask us, is the very best reason to make a move.

Continuing on with our Wacky Wednesday posts, this week we uncover the story beind the Piano in the Tree!

This is one of Clermont’s most recognisable landmarks.

Most of us know the story. When the devastating 1916 flood tore through the old township, the force of the water was so extraordinary that a piano was swept away and later found lodged in a tree.

Except there’s a rather wacky part of the story that doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough…

THERE WASN’T JUST ONE PIANO. THERE WERE THREE! 🎹🎹🎹

Isaac Regional Council’s historical information records that when the floodwaters receded, three separate pianos were found wedged amongst the limbs of trees around Clermont.

And the pianos weren’t alone.

The floodwaters reached such incredible heights and carried so much debris that, when the clean-up began, all sorts of belongings and foreign objects were discovered caught in the treetops.

There’s even a story that one of the pianos was found 32 feet – almost 10 metres – up a tree along Sandy Creek. Now, we need to put an asterisk beside that one: we’ve found the claim repeated in a visitor account, but haven't yet found a reliable historical source to confirm it. So it may be fact, it may be folklore… but given what we know about that flood, you wouldn't immediately rule it out!

The piano we see today in Capricorn Street is a steel replica, placed there as a reminder of the extraordinary height and destructive power of the floodwaters.

The 1916 flood claimed at least 65 lives, devastated the business centre and ultimately led to the decision to relocate Clermont to higher ground.

So next time you take a visitor past our famous Piano in the Tree, you can casually drop this little piece of Clermont trivia: There were three pianos lodged in trees...not just the one!

We are not sure when the piano was unveiled, or who made it - at a guess we think late 70s when the stump flood memorial was unveiled! If you know, then let us know...
