❓ ASK MATT MONDAYS
Should firewood be stored away from the house?

Yes, definitely.

Now that winter is behind us, there are probably plenty of homes around the Northern Rivers with leftover firewood that won't get much use for the next few months.

Where you store it matters.

Firewood is timber, and when it's sitting directly on the ground and exposed to our warmer weather and summer rain, it can create exactly the sort of conditions termites like.
If that pile is also sitting right beside your house, you're potentially creating a termite-friendly environment close to the building.

My advice is pretty simple:

🪵 Keep firewood away from the house
⬆️ Raise it off the ground where possible
☀️ Keep it dry and well ventilated
🔎 Check stored timber regularly for signs of termite activity
🏠 Avoid stacking timber against walls or other parts of the building

Termite management isn't only about what we do during an inspection or treatment. Reducing conducive conditions around your property is an important part of protecting your home.

A few simple changes around the yard can make a real difference.

And if you're not sure what around your property could be increasing your termite risk, that's one of the things I look for during a thorough termite inspection.

Termites never take a day off.

If you’ve found active termites in your home, getting quotes and understanding your treatment options is important.

But there’s something else you need to remember, the termites aren’t waiting while you make a decision.

They don’t stop feeding because you’re organising another quote. They don’t slow down over the weekend. And they certainly don’t know you’re planning to deal with them next week.

If you want to compare treatment options, get onto it early. Ask questions, understand what’s being recommended and make an informed decision, but don’t allow the process to drag on unnecessarily.

Every extra day active termites remain untreated is another opportunity for damage to continue, including in areas of the home you may not be able to see.

Get your quotes. Understand your options. Then act.

I’ve covered this and more in our article Why Delaying Termite Treatment Can Cost Thousands.

❓ ASK MATT MONDAYS

If I kill the termites I can see, have I killed the colony?

Almost certainly not.

The termites you've found are usually only a small part of a much bigger colony.

The main colony could be underground, inside a tree, within another part of the property or some distance away from where you've actually discovered the activity.

That's why simply spraying or killing the termites you can see isn't the answer.

In fact, if you discover live termites around your home, my advice is don't disturb them and don't start spraying them with whatever you've got in the shed.

You may kill the termites directly in front of you, but that doesn't mean you've dealt with the colony. Disturbing the activity can also make it harder for us to assess what's happening and determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.

The first job is to properly investigate:

🔎 Where is the activity?
🐜 How extensive is it?
🏠 Where are they gaining access?
🪵 What parts of the property are affected?
🛡️ What's the right treatment for this particular situation?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to termites.

Find them. Leave them alone. Get them professionally assessed.

Then we can work out the right way to tackle the actual problem, not just the termites you happened to see.

We see this so often... a simple mistake: storing timber in subfloor areas. Out of sight, out of mind, but directly in the path of termite activity. A simple discovery can save you thousands of dollars.

TERMITE BAIT STATIONS AREN’T “SET AND FORGET” 🐜

I come across this far more often than I’d like.

A homeowner has termite bait stations installed around their property and assumes they’re protected. But when we take a closer look, some of those stations haven’t been inspected or maintained for a long time.

These photos are a good example of what neglected stations can look like.

A termite baiting system is only useful when it’s regularly inspected, maintained and updated as required.

Over time, stations can fill with soil, roots can grow through them, monitoring material can deteriorate, and conditions around the property can change. Most importantly, regular inspections are what allow us to identify termite activity and respond appropriately.

Simply having plastic stations sitting in the ground isn’t the protection. The ongoing management of the system is.

If you already have termite bait stations around your home but can’t remember the last time they were checked, it might be time to have someone take a look.

At Zone Pest, we’re big believers in proper ongoing termite management, not installing something and forgetting about it.

❓ ASK MATT MONDAYS

Do you inspect roof voids?

Absolutely, where it's safe and accessible, the roof void is an important part of a thorough pest and termite inspection.

A lot can be happening above your ceiling that you'd never know about from inside the house.

When I get into a roof void, I'm not just having a quick look from the access hatch. I'm inspecting accessible areas for signs of termite activity, timber damage, moisture issues and evidence of other pests that may be making themselves at home up there.

I'm looking at things like:

🔎 Timber framing and roof structures
🐜 Evidence of termite activity or damage
💧 Moisture and potential water issues
🐀 Evidence of rodents and other pests
⚠️ Anything else that warrants further investigation

For me, a proper inspection is about looking at the whole property.

That means inside the home, around the exterior, under the floor where accessible, and yes, up into the roof void.

Some of the most important things I find during inspections are in places homeowners simply don't see in everyday life.

The more thoroughly we inspect, the better chance we have of finding a problem early.

Termites don’t stop causing damage while you’re deciding what to do next.

If active termites have been found in your home, delaying treatment can give the colony more time to keep feeding, and what might already be a concerning problem can become a much more expensive one.

One of the questions I’m often asked is whether waiting a few weeks or months really makes much difference.

The answer is yes, it can.

Termites can remain hidden inside walls, flooring, structural timbers and other areas of the property, so the damage you can see may only be part of the story.

That’s why, when active termites are discovered, my advice is always to understand the extent of the problem and get a proper treatment plan in place as soon as possible.

I’ve put together a detailed article explaining why delaying termite treatment can cost thousands, what can happen while you wait, and why acting early can make such a difference.

❓ ASK MATT MONDAYS

How much damage can termites do before they're found?

Unfortunately, quite a lot.

One of the biggest problems with termites is that they don't need to be out in the open to cause damage.

They can be feeding on structural timber behind your walls, beneath your floors, and above your ceilings while the surfaces you see every day still look perfectly normal.

I've inspected homes where there were very few obvious warning signs, only to discover significant termite damage once we investigated further.

And that's the point I always try to get across to homeowners:

Don't wait until you can see the damage.

A professional termite inspection is about finding the things you can't see. I use a combination of experience, specialist equipment, and a thorough inspection process to investigate the areas where termite activity can remain hidden.

The longer termites remain undetected, the more opportunity they have to damage flooring, wall framing, roof timbers, and other parts of your home.

Regular inspections give us a much better chance of finding activity before a hidden problem becomes a major repair bill.
